Obituary for Steven G. "Mazz" Mazzarella

Steven G. "Mazz" Mazzarella, age 62, a resident of Naperville, IL since 1984, passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at his home. He was born November 30, 1956 in LaGrange, IL.

Beloved husband of Lesly A. Mazzarella (nee Sartori), whom he married August 12, 1984, loving father of Patrick (fiancée, Liza Zaydes) Mazzarella, Megan (Ben) Coleman and Matthew Mazzarella, adored grandfather of Emma Nicole Mazzarella (2) and Gwen Carmella Coleman (1), devoted son of Joseph and Dolores Mazzarella, dear brother of Joseph (Ann) Mazzarella and the late Donna (Tom) Wood, son-in-law of the late Daniel J. and Joanne Marie Sartori, brother-in-law of Amy (Gary) Williams, Jill (Frank) Knight, Dana Sartori, and Meredith (Ted) Manikas, fond nephew, uncle, great-uncle, godfather and friend of many.

Mazz grew up in LaGrange, IL, attended St. Cletus Grade School and was a 1974 graduate of Lyons Township High School. He received his BA in Education from Western Illinois University in Macomb and his Master's in Education from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.

After working as a paid on-call fireman for the LaGrange Fire Department, Mazz began a thirty year plus teaching career at Naperville North High School, where he taught Health and coached springboard diving. Mazz worked summers as a pool manager at the Farmstead Swim & Racquet Club in Naperville and was involved as a friend and mentor for many years with Operation Snowball, a drug and alcohol prevention program.

Mazz was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Naperville and enjoyed spending time at the family cottage in Colon, MI. He also enjoyed water skiing and running and ran in the Boston, Chicago and Naperville Marathons.

Mazz will be remembered by his family, friends, students and colleagues as a person who loved life and tried every day to serve others.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, 3:00-8:00 PM at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 17, 10:00 AM at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, 2220 Lisson Rd., Naperville, IL.

Entombment: Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, IL.
