Obituary for Sammy L. Sharum

Sammy Lou Sharum (nee Swensen), age 76, a resident of Plainfield, IL since 2002, formerly of Olalla, WA, peacefully passed away at her home on Tuesday evening, August 7, 2018. She was born January 14, 1942 in St. Anthony, ID.

Beloved wife of Henry P. Sharum, Jr., who she married December 29, 1964, loving mother of Sondra (the late Bill) Patten of Belfair, WA; Henry “Tad” (Lori) Sharum of Plainfield; Arnold (Linda) Sharum of Plainfield; and Leonard (Lisa) Sharum of Marietta, GA; adored grandmother of Will (Shelbee) Patten, Danny Patten, Luetta Jarrett and twin brother, the late Rocky Patten, Stacy and Kimberly Patten; Hank, Sam and Ben Sharum; A.J. and Paige Sharum; Elizabeth, Danielle and Kathleen Sharum, cherished great-grandmother of Willie, Danny, Rocky, Liam, Connor and Declan, devoted daughter of the late Arnold and Luetta Swensen, dear sister of Elvagene Ertzberger of Longview, WA and the late Andrew, Howard, Ralph, Leonard and Arnetta, fond sister-in-law, cousin, aunt, great-aunt and friend of many.

The youngest of nine (9) children, Sammy was born and spent her entire childhood on a ranch/farm alongside the Snake River in the lower northeast corner of Idaho within view of the Tetons. She had many wonderful memories of her childhood and raised in a loving home where she learned the importance of family, faith in God, service to others, and hard work.

She attended South Fremont High School, then later completed Beauty School and worked as a Beautician. A few years later she met the love of her life, Henry, and since he was a career Navy man, this resulted in many moves, to several states, across the USA over the course of their 53yr marriage. Along this journey she lovingly raised four (4) devoted children, while also working as a Nurses Aid, Lunch Lady, Custodian, and serving several hundred hours as a Little League Volunteer – one thing could be said about Sammy is that no one could ever out work her.

Sammy eventually settled and retired in the suburbs of Chicago where she enjoyed the love and friendship of many in addition to becoming a cherished and loving Grandma & Great-Grandma.

She was especially known both for her incredibly tasty home-baked goods: cakes, cookies, pies, pancakes…; and also, her award-winning hand stitched quilts. Her quilting hobby truly was a labor of love – Sammy completed dozens and dozens of quilts to give to family and friends. What brought her the most joy was service to others and being around those she loved.
