Obituary for Donald J. Haas

Donald J. Haas, a third generation, life-long resident of Naperville, IL, died Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at age 93, after suffering from Parkinson's disease for a decade. He was born September 10, 1924, at St. Charles Hospital, Aurora, IL, to Joseph and Elizabeth "Lil" (nee Trees) Haas and was the grandson of John and Anne (nee Rechenmacher) Haas of Naperville.

Don was the beloved husband of the late Evelyn Marie Haas (nee Dillon), whom he married June 23, 1948, and who preceded him in death on March 12, 2014; devoted father of Daniel (Carole) Haas, David Haas, Randall Haas, Diane (Paul) Parpet, and Ronald (Karen) Haas; dearest grandfather of Jason (Amber) Haas, Daniel Haas, and Steven (Marta) Haas, Brittany (Tom) Stukel, Brooke (Daniel) Emmens, and Bridget Parpet, Dana Haas, Claire Haas, and Owen Haas; son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth "Lil" (nee Trees) Haas; dear brother of Constance (George) Bentz; loving brother-in-law of Agnes (the late Paul) Kunzman, Edna (the late Richard) Broad, Maureen (James) Nelson, Judith (the late James) Rodell, Donald Dillon, the late Katherine Dillon, the late Thomas Dillon, the late Patrick Dillon, and the late Richard Dillon; fond uncle of many nieces and nephews, including Mitch (Denise) Bentz and Graham (Holly) Bentz.

Don grew up in Naperville, was a longtime member of SS. Peter Paul Catholic Church and attended SS. Peter & Paul Grade School and Naperville Community High School. He received a bachelor's degree from North Central College in 1948 and a master's degree from Northwestern University in 1950.

Don taught and coached track at the high school in Marseilles, IL, in the early 1950's, then taught business law and psychology at Lyons Township High School and Junior College in LaGrange, IL, from the mid 1950’s until the early 1970's, with summer employment instructing tennis for youth programs in Aurora, IL, and driving a shuttle bus at Argonne National Laboratory. After retirement from teaching, he drove school buses transporting principally special education students for the Naperville school districts during the 1970's and 1980's.

Don was a proud U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II. Don was stationed as a teletype operator on the Pacific island of Tinian on the day that the first atomic bomb was loaded on the bomber "Enola Gay" for transport from Tinian to be dropped on Hiroshima. He received marksman status with a carbine and three bronze battle stars in the Pacific Theater for his military service. While in the military, Don also had the good fortune of meeting his future wife, Evelyn, at a USO dance in McCook, NE.

Don enjoyed sports throughout his life. He played on two semi-pro adult baseball teams, the Eola Butterbeans and Reed’s Braves, which competed in towns throughout the Fox Valley region in the 1960's. He also was proficient at tennis and bowling, and scored 300 in Naperville bowling leagues several times. Golf became Don's passion in the 1970's through the early 2000’s, and he celebrated several holes-in-one.
