Obituary for Irene Ruth Schindel

Irene Ruth Schindel (nee Hassert) passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at her home in Naperville, IL, at the age of 100, after a long, active and productive life.

She was born April 13, 1918 to Albert Hassert and Fredricka Blasing Hassert. She was raised in a family of six brothers and sisters on a farm in Will County, attended a rural one-room school through 8th grade, and graduated from Lemont Township High School in 1936. After graduating from Joliet Junior College, she began a teaching career which lasted over forty years. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from National Louis University and completed graduate work at Northern Illinois University. Irene taught at several rural schools as well as schools in Westmont, Warrenville, Woodridge, and Naperville. She retired in 1979 after teaching 5th grade at Beebe Elementary School in Naperville for 20 years.

Irene met George Andrew Schindel before the beginning of WWII and married him on January 18, 1948, at which time she moved to Naperville. Their daughter, Carol Ann, was born in 1951. Irene and George were married for fifty years when he passed away in 1998.

Irene joined Naperville’s Community United Methodist Church (formerly First Evangelical United Brethren Church) in 1954 and was a faithful and committed member for over sixty years. She served as a children’s Sunday School teacher and the Women’s Book Club secretary-treasurer, participated in the multi-cultural outreach team, attended the Forum adult class, and worked on many committees.

After her retirement from teaching in 1979, Irene devoted much of her time to tutoring both children and adults learning English as a second language, teaching literacy skills to adults, and volunteering as a reading coach in the public schools. She joined several women’s golf leagues, and played multiple times a week at White Eagle Country Club as well as Springbrook and Naperbrook Golf Courses. She also stayed fit by walking, often along the Naperville Riverwalk near her home. She was a member of the Family Service Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Will County Farm Bureau, and DuPage County Chapter of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, where she also served as secretary.

Throughout her adult life she traveled frequently, making her first cross-country road trip to California in 1939 with a sister and brother. She visited most of the states in the U.S. as well as countries in North and Central America, Europe, North and West Africa, Asia, plus Australia. She made her last solo trip at the age of 91 and her last family trip at the age of 96.

Irene’s formative years during the Great Depression had a profound effect on her life. She appreciated the value of hard work and obtaining a good education. Over the years she had a positive impact on thousands of children and adults and encouraged them to reach their greatest potential through hard work. She never missed an opportunity to learn something new herself; she took countless courses on a variety of subjects well into her 80’s. She also enjoyed reading, and she much preferred books, magazines, and newspapers to movies or television. She loved the out-of-doors, not only the golf course but also her own yard where she tended her lawn and garden until the age of 92. She and her husband shared an appreciation for dance music, especially the big band sound of the 1930s and 40’s, and were members of a ballroom dance club for decades. Another of Irene’s favorite pastimes was cooking. She made traditional midwestern fare, as well as gourmet dishes, and was also a master baker.

Every Christmas she made intricately decorated cookies for family and friends. Her pies, cakes, and caramels were always in demand. She was never idle. She was organized, self-reliant, and took pride in everything she did. Never boastful, she was, nonetheless, proud of her daughter and son-in-law, her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her older sister and her three brothers and their spouses: Evelyn Homerding (John), Howard Hassert (Dorothy), Roy Hassert (Irene), George Hassert (Blanche); brother-in-law Harold Thoman; her parents-in-law: Edmund and Ida Hagemann Schindel; four sisters and three brothers-in-law and their spouses: Viola Kinsey, Emma Bailey (Warren), Margaret Schultz (Ben), Gladys Venard (Charles), Raymond Schindel (Alice), Edmund Schindel II (Marion), and William Schindel (Betty); brother-in-law Edward Heim; three nieces; and seven nephews.

She is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law,Carol and Hendrik Knipscheer of Maumelle, AR; granddaughter, Christine Belling of Memphis, TN; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Paul and Beth Knipscheer of Maumelle, AR; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Nicholas Belling; Christian and Ellis Knipscheer; sister, Pearl Thoman; sister-in-law, Vernette Heim; eight nieces; eleven nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews and their children. She is also survived by long-time, dedicated caregiver, Karen Shirky, who devoted herself to providing for Irene’s needs for eight years.

Visitation will be held Monday, May 7, 3:00-8:00 PM at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 8, 10:00 AM at the funeral home with Rev. Grace Imathiu, followed by burial at Clarendon Hills Cemetery in Darien, IL.
