Obituary for Jean Dawley Scrymiger

Jean Dawley Scrymiger passed away peacefully at the age of 87 at Sunrise Assisted Living Center in Naperville, IL on February 9, 2018 after more than a decade long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Jean was born on November 23, 1930, the daughter of Myron and Ruth Dawley and the sister of Garwin and Bruce (all deceased).

She was raised in Western Springs, IL. While attending Grinnell College, she met the love of her life, Richard Scrymiger. After her graduation in 1952, Dick and Jean married and settled in Naperville where they raised three daughters and Jean worked as a speech therapist in the public school system.

Jean was involved in her daughters’ activities and was a tireless volunteer in the community, devoting time to Literacy Volunteers of America (ESL), Meals on Wheels, and Family Service Organization. Jean was a member of First Congregational Church for over 60 years and was active in numerous church committees.

She was passionate about hand-quilting, sewing, and music, particularly never missing the weekly summer band concerts. Jean enjoyed participating in golf and tennis leagues but she was happiest playing the organ and spending time with close friends and family. Those who knew Jean remember her kindness, humor, and thoughtfulness.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years and survived by her daughters, Jeri (Ross) Holm of Lake Geneva, WI, Wendy (Charles) Kolodkin of Westlake, OH, and Gail (Steve) Racelis of Holland, MI, grandchildren, Beth (Chris) Kimbrell, Rori (James) Dismang, Jeff and Jane Kolodkin, Jocelyn, Blake, and Charlie Racelis, and two great grandchildren, Carter and Dawson Kimbrell.

A celebration of Jean’s life will be held at First Congregational Church, 25 E. Benton Avenue, Naperville on Saturday, February 24 at 2:00 pm.

Memorial contributions can be made in her name to the First Congregational Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
