Obituary for Marie Landiak

Marie Landiak passed away peacefully on February 4, 2018, leaving us to join her beloved husband, Nicholas, in heaven. She was 97 years old. Marie was born Mary Katherine Zubina, in Jersey City, on October 22, 1920, to the late John and Sophie Kozak Zubina. She grew up on Long Island, in Mattituck, NY. During the second world war, Marie was "Rosie the Sodderer", making radios at RCA in Newark, NJ. There she met USMMA cadet Nicholas Landiak, the love of her life, on a blind date. Marie and Nicholas knew that they were meant for each other, and married in October 1946. Marie obtained a cosmetic electrolysis license after the war, and opened her own business in 1948.

Marie and Nicholas settled in New Jersey, where they raised their family. Marie retired from business in 1959. She was an avid bridge player, golfer and club woman, activities that she enjoyed well into her 90's. Marie and Nicholas were great dancers, and never missed an opportunity to show them how it was done out on the dance floor! They moved to State College, PA, in 1970, and had many happy years with their many friends there. They particularly enjoyed long rides in the beautiful Pennsylvania mountains and countryside. In their retirement, Marie and Nicholas enjoyed traveling abroad and throughout the United States. They relocated to Naperville, IL, in 2015.

Marie was predeceased by her loving husband of 71 years, her parents, her brothers, John and Peter Zubina, and her sister, Anne Armusewicz. She leaves three children to cherish her memory, Karen Hess (Andrew), Marilyn Landiak (Murv) and Mark Landiak (Barbara), along with seven grand-children and six great-grandchildren.

A joint service for Nicholas and Marie will be held in the Spring, at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, in Great Meadows, New Jersey, near the Landiak family farm. Internment to follow at Pequest Union Cemetery in Great Meadows.

The family wishes heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff of Sunrise Assisted Living Naperville North and Transitions Hospice for their amazing and abundant love and support to both of our parents and to us during this difficult time.
