Obituary for Robert J. Lynch

Robert James Lynch, consummate class act and true gentleman, passed away May 9, 2020. Born on May 19, 1932 in Detroit, MI to Francis and Cecile Lynch, Robert is preceded in death by his sister, Lois Vincent, as well as his former wife, cherished friend, and mother to his children, Jeannine Lynch. He is survived by his brother Dennis Lynch.

Robert was a supportive and loving father to his six children: Kathleen Parisi (Chuck Parisi), Timothy Lynch (Vera Lynch), Kevin Lynch (Nancy Badegain-Lynch), Brian Lynch, Wendy Einspar (Willard Einspar), and Colleen Loomis. He was a proud grandfather to Caitlin, Jack and Robby Parisi; Brittany Lynch; Christopher and Nicole Lynch; Chloe, Will, and Gunner Einspar; and Declan and Jet Loomis.

Robert briefly studied at Wayne State before serving from October 1952-August 1954 as a sergeant in the Army during the Korean War. He then taught early education until finding his true element in training medical professionals on new advances in the medical field as a sales representative at Chesebrough-Ponds, and, ultimately, as an independent representative for various medical supply companies throughout the Chicago area.

Being in nature was one of his truest loves, whether it was downhill or cross-country skiing, walks through forests, bow hunting with his brother and sons (although, truth be told, he never had any intention of shooting a deer, for he loved each and every creature of nature too much), canoeing down a river, gardening, sailing, or lounging on the beach. Robert managed to instill his love for most of these passions, especially the beach, in each one of his children and grandchildren.

But Robert was also a renaissance man who enjoyed the tranquil quietude offered by the great indoors. He loved reading books, listening to classical music while resting in his wingback chair (rustic yet refined, he loved that silhouette), and, of course, reveling in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.

Robert was an impeccable dresser who made even the most precisely tailored garbs appear somehow effortless and understated. He looked dashing in a suit, but even in day-to-day life, he sported perfectly pressed khaki pants and long-sleeved button-down shirts. Polished, neat, fashionable, and so undeniably him.

Robert had a sharp sense of humor and a quick wit. He loved to make others laugh, but he could also be earnest and was a trusted confidant and advisor on matters of the heart. He brightened the lives of those around him with his radiant smile, genuine gratitude for the little things, and his unique ability to notice a person’s strengths and express them with admiration. He believed deeply in the pursuit of one’s dreams and was ever encouraging. You always left a conversation with Robert feeling better about yourself and with greater hope for life itself. His parting words in conversation were often, “Keep a smile on your face and a rainbow in your heart.” To his dear friends and loved ones, this is the greatest gift he has left with us—a smile on our face for our fond memories and a rainbow in our heart for all that he revealed about the joy and beauty in life.

A military burial will be held when circumstances allow for a proper gathering of friends and loved ones. In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome a donation made in Robert’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association or, in recognition of his deep appreciation for nature’s beauty, a tree planted in his honor.
