Reverend Monsignor John W. "Jack" Dalton, age 95, longtime Catholic priest in the Archdiocese of Dubuque, IA, at rest with the Lord on Monday, January 7, 2019. Msgr. Dalton died peacefully at St. Patrick's Residence in Naperville, IL. He was born June 9, 1923 in Chicago, IL, son of the late James and Margaret (nee Carmody) Dalton.

Beloved brother of Joanne (Eugene "Jess") Callahan of Western Springs, IL, Patrick (Ginger) Dalton of Northbrook, IL, the late Mary (Raymond) Manning, the late Margaret "Peg" (Barney) Sloan, the late Catherine (the late Thomas) O'Connor and the late James Dalton, dear uncle, great-uncle and friend of many.

Msgr. Dalton grew up in Chicago, served in the U.S. Army during World War II and graduated from DePaul University in 1950. Following three years of association with the Catholic Cemeteries of Chicago, he began his studies for the priesthood at Loras College in Dubuque. His theological studies were at the former Mount St. Bernard Seminary in Dubuque. He was ordained as a priest on February 1, 1958 and named an Honorary Prelate on July 30, 1987.

Msgr. Dalton's first assignment was as Assistant Pastor of St. Joseph Church, Farley, IA, where he also served on the high school faculty. In August, 1963, he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Dubuque, Archdiocesan Master of Ceremonies and Secretary to the Archbishop, serving in these capacities until 1979. In addition, he served as Archdiocesan Moderator of the Campaign for Human Development and also of Catholic Relief Services. Msgr. Dalton was co-responsible for the formation of the first Archdiocesan Pastoral Council and served as the first chairperson of the Archdiocesan Worship Commission, Moderator of the Council of Catholic Women, served on the Medical Moral Commission, Director of Pro-Life and the Board of Archdiocesan Building Commission. He also served as chaplain of the Dubuque Law Enforcement Agencies. Msgr. Dalton served on the governing Board of Clarke College, Dubuque, where he received an honorary doctorate on May 15, 1993.

In 1969, he was appointed National Director of Catholic Cemeteries, an appointment he served until his retirement in 1993. In 1991 and 1992, he served as President of the National Catholic Cemetery Conference.

Msgr. Dalton was appointed Pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Cedar Rapids, IA in 1979, serving until 1982 when he was named Rector of St. Raphael Cathedral, Dubuque where he undertook the extensive renovation of both the Cathedral Center and the Cathedral.

Msgr. Dalton is known to many in the Dubuque area as "Sean the Chef", the name under which he wrote a monthly food column for many years in Julien's Journal, a local Dubuque monthly magazine.

Msgr. Dalton retired in 1993 and made his home with his late sister, Mary Manning, in Naperville, IL and served various parishes and institutions in the area including St. Patrick's Residence, a Carmelite nursing home where he served as chaplain and where he later became a resident.

Visitation Friday, January 11, 2019, 4:00-8:00 PM at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1500 Brookdale Rd., Naperville.

Additional visitation Saturday, January 12, 10:00-11:00 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, 11:00 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.

Interment: Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, IL
