Obituary for Rev. Herbert B. Carlmark

Rev. Herbert B. “Herb” Carlmark, age 87, a longtime resident of Naperville, IL, passed away on Tuesday, September 18, 2018. He was born October 1, 1930 in Moline, IL.

Pastor Carlmark was ordained on June 17, 1956. He received a BA from Augustana College, Rock Island, IL in 1952 and graduated from Augustana Seminary in 1956.

From 1956 to 1962, Pastor Carlmark served at Calvary Lutheran Church in Rapid River, MI and Trinity Lutheran Church in Stonington, MI. He served at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Naperville, IL from 1962-1974. During that time he was active in the Ecumenical Ministerium of Naperville. Pastor Carlmark was known at Our Saviour’s for his booming voice, his sack sermons and care for the congregation and community.

Pastor Carlmark was assistant to the Bishop of the Illinois Synod of the Lutheran Church in America from 1974 to 1988. While on the staff, he took special delight in shepherding candidates for ministry.

Pastor Carlmark served as assistant director for the Division of Ministry in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) from 1988 until his retirement in 1996. During retirement, he served interim pastorates in Omaha and Scotts Bluff, NE, as well as in the Metropolitan Chicago Synod. He also volunteered for the ELCA’s Office of the General Counsel, served as pulpit supply and was a member of the synod’s Constitution Review Committee.

Herb was an avid Packers and Cubs fan and immensely enjoyed the Cub’s World Series win in 2016 and was ardently cheering for a repeat this year.

Herb was the son of the late Roy Evert and Ruby (nee Brandt) Carlmark. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Neal Carlmark and brother and sister-in-law, Bruce and Martha Carlmark.

Herb is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nancy Carlmark (nee Freed) and two children, Nan (Dan) Dahlke and Tim Carlmark. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Ben (Karen) Dahlke, Tyler Dahlke, Alyssa Dahlke, Angelique Bolin and Connor Carlmark as well as his great-grandsons, Braxton, Brayden and Brody Dahlke, a sister, Joanne Pound and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Visitation will take place Saturday, October 6, 2018, 9:30 - 10:45 AM at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 815 S. Washington St., Naperville, IL 60540, (630) 355-2522.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, 11:00 AM in the church.

Inurnment will follow in the Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church Columbarium.

After the conclusion of services, a luncheon will be held at the church.
