Obituary for Peter Robert Guthrie

Peter R. Guthrie, age 64 of Naperville, IL, formerly of Bismarck, ND, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 in the loving presence of his family at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago after a 21-month illness with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Peter was born on December 29, 1954 in Bismarck, ND, the fifth of eight children of Ruth (Gallagher) Guthrie and Robert Guthrie. He graduated from Bismarck High School in 1973, worked for National Car Rental in Salt Lake City, UT, and attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks for two years where he met his wife Marilyn Isabel Heilman of Rugby, ND. The couple was married at St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby on June 21, 1980.

Peter started his professional career with Public Finance Corporation in 1977 where he was the Branch Manager of consumer loan offices in Bismarck, ND and two offices in Kansas. In October 1979, he began his 30 year career in automotive finance with Chrysler Financial Corporation as a Credit Supervisor in Bismarck and quickly moved up in the organization holding a series of increasingly responsible positions in sales, retail and dealer credit, and oversight of field operations with assignments in San Francisco, Chicago, Minneapolis, and Detroit. He was instrumental in assisting in the integration of operations when Mercedes Benz Credit Corporation and Chrysler Financial Corporation merged to form DaimlerChrysler Services North America LLC in 1998. While in the midst of working and raising five children, Peter was determined to finish his college degree, graduating in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Northwood University, Midland, MI. Peter was a valued professional mentor to many and a man of true integrity in his dealings with both employees and clients. During his career, he was respected for his candor and technical/analytical financial knowledge, admired as a dynamic speaker, involved in numerous overseas business trips, and was known for his humor and positive demeanor in his interactions with all. He retired at the end of 2009 as the Chicago Chrysler Financial’s Midwest Business Center Director in charge of an eight-state region.

Peter was born with a curious and adventurous spirit. At a young age, his hands were discovering his world, at times trying the patience of his parents and teachers.

His strong hands kept him focused by repairing the family cars, rebuilding his 1954 “Bob the Buick,” and working on construction jobs with his father’s contracting business.

Peter used his hands to instinctively and gently feed, hold and bathe his babies – he was a natural. His steady, comforting hands calmed his children as he methodically cleaned up small wounds or pulled baby teeth, creating fun and teachable moments. Guiding them, Peter pointed his children in a direction toward becoming responsible, courageous, and self-reliant.

His hands kept his cars, tools, household equipment, and his children’s cars thoroughly clean and in perfect working condition. He always valued structure in his methods to keep things in proper working order. Peter’s fingers moved effortlessly across his computer keyboard to monitor airplane traffic, financial markets, world-wide politics and to create his many household Excel spread sheets. As an avid world traveler, he would often spend hours doing extensive research to create detailed itineraries for his family and friends, especially delighting in introducing them to some of his favorite destinations. Daily, Peter handwrote out his “lists” that reflected the loving care and attention he provided to so many aspects of his family’s life. Peter prepared many gourmet meals; chopping, mincing, dicing, slicing, sipping on a glass of wine – it was the process he enjoyed.

Peter knew the importance of connection with people, friends and family and strangers alike. He taught his children the value of a genuine handshake.

Peter and Marilyn had a constant and inseparable bond. Beginning with holding hands during their wedding vows 39 years ago, through hugs of loving support during challenging times, to PRG’s soothing shoulder and back rubs, to packing up boxes of household items with each move to a new city for work over the years, to holding hands entering the many clinic visits and hospital stays, Peter and Marilyn were true partners. They were companions, linked hand-in-hand, during their many adventurous travels.

And at the end of Peter’s life, during his dying moments, he said to his dear family, “Come sit with me….hold my hand.”

Dearest Peter, my beloved husband, our dad, our brother, our friend, we will forever miss your strong and giving hands. In the midst of our grief, we take comfort that you have “let the Catcher catch” and that you are now resting in God’s loving hands.

Peter was the beautiful husband (Still the One) of Marilyn, the much loved dad of Margie (AJ) Kemsley of Mason, MI, Ann Guthrie of Willowbrook, IL, Molly Guthrie of Chicago, IL, Robert Guthrie of Milwaukee, WI, and Betsy Guthrie of Chicago, the adored nonno (grandpa) of Paige Kemsley, the dearest brother of Mary Gold, Roseville, MN, James Guthrie, Mission Viejo, CA, Eileen (Gordy) Wiese, Bismarck, ND, Annette (Bruce) Atterberg, Richville, MN, Susan (Tom Deegan) Guthrie, St. Anthony, MN, and Fr. John Guthrie, New Salem, ND, the cherished brother-in-law to many, and the endearing uncle of 32 nieces and nephews.

Peter was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Bridgid (Steve) Norgaard, and niece Nicole Thorson.
