Obituary for Marie K. Straus Bautista

Marie K. (Straus) Bautista, nee Flaherty, age 93 was born on January 23, 1927 in Omaha, NE to John M. and Helen (Welsh) Flaherty. Marie passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 1, 2020, in Naperville, IL while residing at St. Patrick’s Residence Nursing and Rehabilitation at the age of 93.

Marie moved to Chicago when she was 18 where she proudly started her career as a secretary for Railway Express. The most satisfying portion of her long working profession was working for McDonald’s Corp. in Oak Brook, IL as an accounting clerk and a legal secretary for 29 years until her retirement at age 79.

Marie was a civic minded individual who looked forward to all presidential elections by performing official duties at specified polling places for over 45 years. She was an amazing mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, godmother, and cook. She had a love for music especially big band and Irish folk songs.

Marie had a lot of spunk, a great sense of humor and was loved by all. One of her favorite pastimes was to board a train and jump off at various western suburban towns to visit their libraries. She was a voracious reader sometimes reading 3 to 4 books a week! She also loved traveling to various destinations such as Palm Desert, CA, New York City, Florida, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Missouri, Georgia and Memphis, TN to visit Elvis Presley’s mansion.

Marie is survived by her children: Kathleen (Peter) Schmidt of Naples, FL, John (Michelle) Straus of Lombard, IL, Steve Straus of Chicago, IL, Susan Dillon of Naperville, IL, Mary (Larry) Wedoff of Lombard, IL, Jim (Annie) Bautista of Plainfield, IL.

Also surviving are grandchildren; Renee Schmidt Waskelis, Rachel (Jim) Schmidt Harding, Andrew (Evaleen) Schmidt, Michael (Kimberly) Straus, Stephanie Straus, Sara Straus, Ashley Wedoff, Jorden Wedoff, Alexis Wedoff, Nadia Bautista and Nicole Bautista. Also surviving are her great-grandchildren; Kaitlyn Schmidt, Brock Schmidt, Madison Straus and Tristan Straus; also surviving are her brothers Jerry Flaherty and Edward Flaherty.

She was preceded in death by her parents John and Helen (Welsh) Flaherty, brother Tommy Flaherty, sister Jean (Flaherty) Renshaw, sister Arlene (Flaherty) Carl, brother Jack Flaherty, sister Elizabeth (Flaherty) Meyer, sister Patricia (Flaherty) Erven, husband Ned Straus and husband Daniel Bautista.
