Obituary for Leon Bernard O'Brien

Leon B. O’Brien, age 100, at rest November 24, 2018 at Rosewood Care Center in Joliet. A resident of the Plainfield area for 60 years, he was born February 2, 1918 on a farm at Reddick, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents; John (Harry) O’Brien and Clara E. (nee Bertrand) O’Brien and a sister (RN) Mary Rose Paquette. Leon is survived by his wife of 77 years, Velma (nee Hunt) O’Brien. They both reached the 100 year mile stone.

They are parents of three children; Paula (Charles) Tutt of Wheatland, Wyoming. Richard (Carol) O’Brien of Oswego, Illinois and John Dean O’Brien of Greely, Colorado. They have nine grandchildren: Angela (Gordon) Callaway, Stephanie (Doug) Van Dyke and Elizabeth (Robert) Locricchio of the Denver Colorado area. Kevin (Loretta) O’Brien of Illinois, Eric (Julie) O’Brien of Michigan, Lisa O’Brien of Kabalie, Uganda, Mark (Rachel) O’Brien of Minnesota. Elyse (Andrew) Ritche of Colorado and Alexandra O’Brien of Texas. They have 16 Great Grandchildren: Jessica Agnew, Lindsay, Logan and Joseph Callaway; Jacob, Abigail, Mathew and Arabella Van Dyke; Cameron and Kyle Locricchio; Connor, Nathan, Sierra, Jonathan and McKenzie-Rae O’Brien; Adelade Ritche. One Great-Great Grandchild: Ella Agnew.

Leon was in the Class of 1936 – Reddick High School. He farmed near Reddick and worked at IHC Dealer in Wilmington, IL. He became a Sergeant in the US Army during WWII, serving in North Africa and Italy. He returned to work at IHC Dealer as a Mechanic, then became a Maintenance Supervisor for Uni-Royal at the Joliet Arsenal, Inspector building the Toll Roads, and retired after 24 years from Caterpillar Tractor Co. (Aurora) Planning Dept. He also worked part time at H and R Block and Senior Center.

Leon was a Life Member of V.F.W. #5422 Wilmington, IL, the Reunion Coordinator for 86th Ord. Co, US Army, as well as a Life member of Moose Lodge 300 Joliet, IL. He was a member of St. Mary’s Immaculate Church, Plainfield, and served many years as Head Usher, a food pantry volunteer, and funeral luncheon volunteer. He was a Charter Member of Good Shepherd Council 5573, Knights of Columbus, and was a Past Grand Knight, 4th Degree, Past Faithful Navigator, Past Commander of Color Guard of Joliet Assembly 204 and Past President of Good Shepherd Building Corporation.

Visitation will be Thursday, November 29, 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Overman-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, corner of Routes 30 & 59, Plainfield. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, November 30, 11:00 AM at St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, 15629 S. Route 59, Plainfield.
