Obituary for John J. Mullen

John J. Mullen, age 93, a longtime resident of Naperville, IL, gently took his last breath on November 30, 2018 while holding the hand of his loving wife in their Naperville home.

He was born on December 3, 1925 in Passaic, NJ.

John is survived by his wife of 69 years Theresa B. Mullen (nee Mathey); children William (Debbie) Mullen, John (Nancy Mandarino) Mullen, Theresa (Jeff) Lodesky, Mary (Thomas) DeLacey, Sue (Tim) Shanahan, Cathy (Greg) Mullen Vogel, Robert Mullen, and Joe (Kathleen) Mullen; grandchildren Bill (Angelita) Casale, Jeremy Mullen, Kate Mullen, Jack Mullen, Christine (Ivan) Avila, Emma (Luis) Munoz, Lisa Lodesky, Jeff (Becki) DeLacey, Matt (Caitlin) DeLacey, Maggie DeLacey, Colleen (Mike) Wehrli, Kerry (Rob) Bollweg, Tim Shanahan, Amy Shanahan, Erin (Eddy) Mujica, Shannon Vogel, Nate Vogel, Amanda Mullen, and Ryan Mullen; step grandchildren Stephanie, Jamie, and Alex Magdic; great grandfather of 9; uncle to 7; care giver Vel Venus.

He is preceded in death by his parents Marie and John Mullen; sisters Marie (the late Rudy) Krack and Joan (the late Dick) Campbell; grandson Fred Mullen; daughter-in-law Renee Petit; nephew Richard Campbell.

John served our country during WWII as a member of the Army Air Corps at the age of 18, after enlisting at 16. Upon his return, he graduated from NYU with a degree in drafting.

He started his career working for Babcock & Wilcox until the company moved out of state. After accepting a position with Libby, McNeill & Libby, he continued his studies at Cornell University where he won the Rice Debate and was a charter member of the Food Service Fraternity. He then became the Director of Marketing for Food Service at Libby’s and was there for 30 years, continuing with Nestle when they acquired the company. He went on to work for Salesforce for the next 10 years before retiring.

John was passionate about golf and was a Ranger for Springbrook Golf Course. He was also an avid photographer his entire life.

John was a founding member of St, Raphael Catholic Church and remained active there for over 54 years.

Above all else, John was a dedicated family man who dearly loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and beyond. He will be remembered as being the kindest, gentlest, most patient man anyone has ever met. He will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be Wednesday, December 5 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services 44 S. Mill St. Naperville, IL 60540.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 6, 10:30 AM at St. Raphael Catholic Church 1215 Modaff Rd. Naperville, IL 60563.

Interment will follow at Ss. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Naperville.
