Obituary for James E. Martin

James (Jim) Edward Martin, age 91, of Lisle, formerly of Wheaton, IL, passed away peacefully, October 1, 2018, at his home at Villa St. Benedict, surrounded by his family. He was born on December 23, 1926, in Jefferson, OH, one of twelve children born to his loving late parents, Paul Revere Martin and Alice Issacson Martin.

Jim was the cherished husband of the late Margaret Meaney Martin, wedded for 64 years, and the beloved father of 6 children: the late Craig (Carol) Martin of Baltimore, MD, Ann (Bob) Kmak of Naperville, IL, Kevin (Sharon) Martin of Hobart, IN, Robert Martin of Lisle, IL, Mary (Brian) Earley of Greenwood, IN, and Barbara (John) Ryan of Naperville, IL. Jim was also a doting grandfather to Colleen (Jonathan) Nikiel, Kathryn (Arthur) Thompson, Diane Kmak, and Mei Lin Kmak, James, Olivia, Benjamin, and Gabriel Ryan; as well as a proud great-grandfather of Averie and Aidan Nikiel, and of Paul and Simon Thompson. Fond brother of Jack, and the late Dorothy, Eleanor, Fran, Millie, George, Marianne, June, Edna, Bud, and his twin sister, Jean. Uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Jim was a 1944 graduate of Jefferson High School. He served in the U.S. Army during and post-WWII in the Philippines. He was selected to serve in the Army Special Services, as a member of its baseball team, to entertain the troops. Upon his return from service, Jim attended Kent State University on the GI Bill, graduating in 1951. Jim then began a successful 50-plus year career in the railroad industry, where he rose from yard clerk to the executive offices of several railroads, including President of the Illinois Central and Belt Railway. He became an expert in safety and inter-modal operations, and was a much sought-after consultant after his retirement. He also served on the Board Directors of 15 railroad companies.

Outside of his successful career, Jim and his wife Margaret were founding members and longtime parishioners of St. Daniel the Prophet Parish in Wheaton. Jim also served on the Finance Board for the Diocese of Joliet, the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army and as Chair of the Homeowners Association at Villa of St. Benedict.

Jim was an incredibly hard-working man of deep integrity and loyalty, who gave of his time and talent to assist countless people and organizations. Some of his and his family’s best times, however, were celebrating important milestones, playing cards and weekly family dinners. He leaves a proud legacy and many happy moments for his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all those who knew him.
