Obituary for James A. Austgen

James A. Austgen, a resident of Woodridge, IL, former longtime resident of Munster, IN, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2019 at St. Patrick’s Residence in Naperville, IL.

He was born on June 12, 1920 in Hammond, IN.

James is survived by his son Richard (Patricia) Austgen; grandchildren James Austgen and Caroline Austgen; many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Helen C. Austgen (nee Rangeloff), who passed away in March of 2018; parents Mary and Nicholas Austgen.

James graduated from Catholic Central High School (now Bishop Noll Institute), Hammond, IN, Class of 1939. He spent the majority of his career working as an accounting clerk for GATX in East Chicago, IN for 34 years. He spent the last 11 years of his career working for Service Auto Parts in Hammond, IN until his retirement.

James was a parishioner for 44 years at St. Thomas More Church in Munster, IN.

As a youth, he fondly remembered attending the 1933-34 World’s Fair in Chicago. He loved dancing to the big bands of the era and met the love of his life, Helen, while on vacation in Minnesota.

He was an avid reader, especially the business and financial sections of the newspapers. He would enjoy going to the library, researching different businesses, watching and listening to business news and then using that information toward the stock market. He also loved listening to the radio, and was able to speak about any subject, as he was very knowledgeable.

James was a fan of Notre Dame Football, the Minnesota Vikings, and the Chicago White Sox.

He enjoyed spending his summers in Minnesota visiting with Helen’s relatives.

He also loved going to different shops throughout the Midwest to help Helen with her love of collecting antiques and dolls.

Most of all, he was a devoted family man who loved his wife, son, and grandchildren. James, much like his granddaughter, enjoyed tennis, country music, and gardening. Much like his grandson, he also loved math. He was his grandchildren’s biggest fan, and was always encouraging them in their academics and sports. He will be deeply missed.
