Obituary for Donovan C. Brand

Donovan Charles Brand left this world peacefully January 6, 2020, in the company of his family. Don was born in Lafayette, Indiana in 1927, to Donovan W. Brand and Carolyn (nee Neighbors) Brand. He attended Jefferson High School and Purdue University, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He moved to Chicago where he met his wife Jane (nee Reynolds), who survives him.

Don and Jane were married in 1950 in Fontana, Wisconsin, and returned to Lafayette, where Don worked for his dad – at Reliable Coal, Lafayette Roofing and Sheet Metal, and Overhead Door Sales. Don ran the business from 1968 until his retirement in 2015. In business as in life, he valued his relationships -- with customers, suppliers and long-time employees.

Don and Jane built one of the original homes in Ravinamy addition in West Lafayette, becoming part of a life-long family of neighbors – many of whose children stay connected to this day. He enjoyed time with friends - golfing, fishing, and hunting with his dog Lady. Don joined most of West Lafayette rooting for the Boilermakers - on fall weekends in Ross Ade stadium, and throughout the basketball season in Mackey arena. Family trips with close friends became a much-anticipated winter event. He got his pilot’s license as a very young man and enjoyed flying throughout his life. He saw any interaction with another human being as an opportunity to socialize, and Don loved to joke and kid with friends and strangers alike. He was curious about the world, and always ready to learn or teach something new.

But more than anything, he loved his family. He raised his daughters to know how much he loved them and how proud he was of them; to know that they could do anything they set their minds to. He cared for Jane, the love of his life, in all of their years together in every way.

Don and his family were members of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lafayette, and his strong faith guided his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Fredric Lloyd, nephew Steve Reynolds and many life-long good friends.

Don is survived by his wife Jane, daughters Jennie Stein of Goodlettsville, TN, Katie (Richard) Albaugh of Naperville, IL, grandsons Jake Albaugh, John Albaugh, Eric (Rachel) Albaugh, and Brett Albaugh, and great-granddaughter Marigold Albaugh. He is also survived by his sister Beverly (Fredric) Lloyd of Indianapolis and her daughters Chris (Bob) Hartley and Carolyn (Patrick) Lloyd-Turbett, and his brothers-in-law Henry (Margaret) Reynolds, Richard (Trudy) Reynolds, and many nieces and nephews.

Many thanks to and fond memories of those who took such good care of Don in his later years, at home and at Sunrise Senior Living in Naperville, IL, where Don and Jane lived since 2016.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 21 at 1:00 pm, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 600 Ferry St. Lafayette, IN; at which time he will be laid to rest in the Columbarium at St. John’s.
