Obituary for Diane Gelwix Somers

Diane Gelwix Somers, age 64 of Naperville for 30 years, passed away peacefully, Monday, September 23, 2019 at Northwestern Hospital of Chicago. She was born February 14, 1955 to her loving late parents, Kenneth and Betty Jo Gelwix. Cherished wife of Dennis W. Somers, wedded on June 8, 1985. Beloved mother of Rickard (Brittany) DeMille, David (Aundrea) DeMille, Robert Dante (Teri) DeMille, Laura Diane Somers, and Alexander Somers. Adored grandmother of Anson, Aaron, Rachel, Andrew, Andrew, Isabella, Jaina, Axel, Gabriel, Logan, and Ender and two expected grandchildren on the way. Dear sister of Kenneth Gelwix, Larry (Cathy) Gelwix, and Tom (Lori) Gelwix. Dearest aunt of many nieces and nephews.
Diane grew up in Lafayette, California. As a child, she enjoyed singing and theater, ballet, and spending summers visiting family in Alberta, Canada. In 1972 Diane graduated from Del Valle High School in Walnut Creek, California. The caption under her yearbook photo would exemplify her life: “Give me a place to stand and I shall move the earth.” Diane served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Northern California in the summer of 1973, at the age of 18.
Diane graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Theater from Brigham Young University. She stayed active in theater throughout her life, starring or directing several productions including Cleopatra, Saturday’s Warrior, Gift of the Magi, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, A Christmas Carol, Arsenic and Old Lace, and The Savior of the World. Diane also served as assistant director of the City of Joseph Pageant in Nauvoo, Illinois for 10 years.
Her talents went beyond performing and directing, and were extremely artistic; she wrote poetry and short stories, sewed, painted, stitched, quilted, drew, made jewelry, voiced audio books, and more. She found great joy in using those talents to bless the lives of others. Her grandchildren loved the handmade gifts, blankets, and Halloween costumes that she frequently surprised them with.
Diane’s greatest fear was missing out on ANY activity or conversation; so she always found a way to include herself in whatever was going on. This leaves no doubt that her spirit will be watching her family from above and is eagerly waiting for the opportunity to chit chat about all we’ve been doing.
Some of Diane’s "vices" included an incurable addiction to America’s Got Talent and her refusal to invest in a watch.
Diane was a devout Christian and lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held many important positions within her congregation, including Seminary and Sunday School Teacher and Young Women’s President. Diane was frequently asked to perform musical numbers and readings at church events.
Diane was unable to harbor such feelings as hate, anger, or jealousy. She could not see another’s lack and not care. Diane and Dennis opened their home to many people over the years that were in need, creating a place where they would feel unconditional love without judgment. Diane’s ultimate legacy was the love she showed everyone she met, especially her family.
