Obituary for Catherine Theresa O'Brien

Catherine Theresa O’Brien, beloved by her family was born in Plainfield, New Jersey on August 13, 1955 as the ninth and youngest child of Maurice J. O’Brien and Beatrice T. Cuddihy O’Brien.

She died of pneumonia in the Park Ridge Care Center, Park Ridge, Illinois on February 26, 2019, after living at home until 2016.

Catherine was a first-generation child of immigrant parents from County Tipperary, Ireland. She is survived and will be missed by six living siblings, Margaret and Arthur Jones of Cantonsville, Maryland, Theresa O’Brien of Hereford, Arizona, Michael F. O’Brien and Marsha Beyer of Boulder, Colorado, Vincent L. and Tina O’Brien of Liberty, Tennessee, Mary P. O’Brien Glatz of Naperville, Illinois, and Patricia M. O’Brien of Yardley, Pennsylvania.

Two brothers, James J. O’Brien of Tallahassee, Florida and John P. O’Brien of San Diego, California predeceased her.

Catherine is also survived by 25 nieces and nephews, including Kelly and John Cairns of Naperville, 35 grandnieces and grandnephews, including Amalie Emmy, Mina Olivia, and Archibald Maxwell Cairns of Naperville, and by her Cuddihy and O’Brien first cousins in Ireland.

Catherine attended Piscataway Township and San Diego Public Schools, completing 12 years of education, and post high school attended St. Madeleine Sophie’s Training Center in San Diego.

To her family members and many caregivers who became her friends, Catherine was an ambassador of loving kindness, tolerance, and diversity. She loved Elvis, The Sound of Music, the 1960s TV shows Star Trek with the original Captain Kirk and Dark Shadows. She was actively engaged in her community for her entire life and enjoyed Special Olympic swimming and bowling, music, puzzles, hook rug weaving, dancing, singing, fellowship and family gatherings.



The public is invited to honor all people with Down Syndrome through the life of this exceptional woman who brought love, honor, and pride to her family, and was a living example of loving kindness, compassion, tolerance, diversity, inclusion, and advocacy for disability rights
