Obituary for Basil J. Blidy

Basil Joseph Blidy, age 77, a resident of Naperville, IL since 1995, formerly of Lombard, IL, passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Edward Hospital in Naperville. Basil was the son of Joseph and Mary Blidy. He was born August 2, 1942 and raised in Chicago. The oldest of three, he was brother to Paul Blidy and Christine (Ron) Ustas.

Over 51 years ago, he married Geraldine and started a happy family. He and Gerry formed an extraordinary partnership which they used as a foundation and basis for celebrating joys, loving their children and grandchildren, being present for the extended family and supporting one another in triumphing over daily life.

With Gerry, he raised Joe (Julee), Bill (Lisa) and Amy (Matt). Together they modeled and taught service, hospitality, humility, gentleness and love that will be part of their legacy for generations.

Never stealing the show, Basil quietly served those he loved. He was the one who would quietly hand you the item you lost after performing an active search. The gas tank was always full if you needed to borrow the car, the hook was baited for you when you fished, the drink appeared in your hand at a party and if you were squinting, he would notice and then subsequently move the sun.

Working in the printing industry his entire career, he worked for R.R. Donnelley in downtown Chicago for the majority of his career and then when the company closed the Chicago location, he was one of the few allowed to transfer to the Dwight facility, finishing his long career with perseverance, retiring from there after 42 years of service.

In the last few years while he was working, he made the move from Lombard to Naperville with Gerry, leaving behind 25 happy years on Grace Street to welcome grandchildren and start their Naperville life together, close to family.

Rebecca, Elise and Dan spent an infinite number of hours with him. He and Gerry saw them several times each week, attended every performance, each sporting event, school awards, bagels on Sunday, all birthday parties and summer vacations.

Introducing fabulous family traditions like light parades, the ringing of the dinner bells, the world’s most intricate Easter Egg hunt and participating in the annual Christmas snowball fight – he made the time together special and uniquely fun.

When his fourth grandchild was born, he switched gears and became a full-time grandfather for several years, becoming a Maribelle expert. All of his grandchildren were his favorites, and he considered Maribelle possibly a special favorite.

Vivianne and Franklin developed their own special bonds with him when they were born and as they grew up, seeing him each morning as they got ready for the bus and spending another infinite amount of hours with their grandfather.

Basil and Gerry traveled together. He was fortunate to visit all 50 states and a good number of countries. He loved to fish, bringing the entire family across lakes on successively bigger boats. Basil was a lifelong chronicler of his life and those he loved, in maps, handwritten journals and organized photo albums. An entire lifetime is recorded, each different day adding up to a beautiful whole.

Basil served his country in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1965, including a tour in Vietnam. He was a regular parishioner at St. Raphael Catholic Church. And, he was devoted to his family.

His legacy is a life well lived, modeling contentment and appreciation of the everyday, attending to each detail, so that when you step back and put it all together, the achievement of all those days together become extraordinary.
