Today people have a much wider selection and the ability to choose additional details that make each item more personal.

The National Funeral Directors Association says personalization of services and items such as caskets and urns seems to have become more meaningful with the aging of the baby boomers.

&ldquo;The idea of personalization has resulted in an explosion of unique services that reflect the hobbies, passions and interests of someone who has died,&rdquo; according to the NFDA. The pillow in a casket might be monogrammed, an image of the deceased might be etched into an urn, or a casket lining can be personalized.

Some caskets can include an insert in the casket lid with a special design such as a military style and others even have a memory drawer, a hidden compartment in the lid where special items can be placed to bury with the loved one, according to funeralwise.com.

Other touches can be more understated such as a scripture or favorite quote on an engraved plate fixed to a casket or urn.
