Obituary for Ruth Lee Pearce

Ruth Lee Pearce (nee Hill), born on February 6, 1922 in Macon, Georgia, to the late Ella Louise Penny and the late James Andrew Hill, passed away at age 96 on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, in Naperville, Illinois. She was a graduate of A. L. Miller High School in Macon, Georgia, and beloved wife of the late Raymond Earl Pearce.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Thomas Oliver Hill, James Andrew Hill, Robert Clark Hill and Charles Franklin Hill; sister, Virginia Rose Simmons; and grandson, Adam Andrew Pearce. Ruth is survived by her son, Raymond Andrew Pearce, sister, Marianne Clark(M.L.); grandson Michael McCabe Pearce; as well as several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Ruth enjoyed hiking the Appalachian Trail, camping in the mountains of North Carolina, and reading mystery novels; particularly, in her later years, those of Jodie Picoult. She also developed an interest in genealogy and was proud to trace her family tree from Georgia to Alabama to Rhode Island and finally to Scotland. She was proud to be related to a character portrayed in the movie, Braveheart. Unfortunately, not William Wallace played by Mel Gibson, but Robert the Bruce who had him executed. You can choose your friends but not your family.
She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church but last attended Vineville United Methodist Church before moving to Naperville in 2012. She chaperoned youth groups to the Methodist Church Conference Center at Epworth by the Sea on St. Simons Island, Georgia, as well as teaching Sunday School.

She was a volunteer with the Girl Scouts of America and spent many summers at Camp Martha Johnston in Lizella, Georgia, as a counselor and leading scouts on overnight hiking trips in the Appalachian Mountains.

She had a life-long love of reading and was a librarian at Washington Memorial Library for several years. She also volunteered as a librarian at the Bibb County Jail where she never hesitated to scold inmates who damaged or abused the books.

"Twilight and evening bell
And after that-the dark.
May there be no sadness of farewell
When I embark."

- Alfred Tennyson
