Obituary for Norman T. Mills

Norman T. Mills, age 86, a resident of Villa St. Benedict in Lisle, IL, passed away on March 26, 2018 at Edward Hospital. He was born on January 16, 1932 in Hammond, IN.

Norman is survived by his devoted wife of 59 3/4 years, Helen, nee McLaughlin; his children, David Mills of Longboat Key, FL, Steve (Dawn) Mills of Grapevine, TX, Doug (Susanne) Mills of Downers Grove, IL, Laura (Fred) Cruciani of Highland, IN, Paula (Wily) Gutierrez of Highland, IN and Cairril Mills of Bloomington, IN; his grandchildren, Rachel Mills, Sara (Leland) Slagle, Andrew Mills, Stephanie (Alex) Gallan, Matthew Mills, Ryan Mills, David Mills, Daniel Cruciani, Rebecca Gutierrez and Elena Gutierrez; and his great-grandaughter, Sophia Gallan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Elsie Mills, and his brother, Eugene (Donna) Mills.

Norman Thomas Mills was born on January 16, 1932 to parents of Arnold and Elsie Mills. Norm graduated from Hammond High School in 1950 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He is a veteran of the Korean War as an aerial photographer for the Navy until 1954. He went on to graduate from Purdue University in 1959 with a BS in Chemical Engineering and while there, Norm married his sweetheart, Helen. He continued his education at the University of Delaware where he received his MS in Chemical Engineering in 1961.

Norm and Helen moved to Speedway, IN where he began his professional career with Lindy Corp. In 1966, the family moved to Highland, IN where Norm worked in the Research Department at Inland Steel for over 18 years while rising to an Executive level. He attained several patents in the area of continuous casting and presented numerous papers to his colleagues on the topic. During his career, Norm was very active in the Iron & Steel Society (ISS) and its parent organization, the American Institute of Metallurgical Engineering (AIME) with various roles, including President of both. In 1987, Norm and Helen moved to Champaign, IL where Norm worked for Flocon. Before fully retiring in 1998, he independently consulted for BOC Gases under his own company.

Eventually Norm and Helen moved to their lovely lakeside home in Monticello, IN in 1994 fulfilling Norm’s dream. He was actively involved with the Knights of Columbus holding the position of Grand Knight for over 2 years. He was also very active in the organization responsible for the preservation of the lakes. Norm and Helen loved traveling around the world. Through his travel with work, family, and vacations, he became part of the ‘Million Miler’ Club with American Airlines.

Over the years, Norm’s family grew to include 4 spouses of his 6 children, 10 grandchildren and 2 more spouses of the grandchildren, and one great granddaughter.
In 2014, Norm and Helen moved to VSB where they have thoroughly enjoyed their new faith fulfilling lifestyle, along with new friendships, exercise routines, and wonderful food. Norm reluctantly joined Helen in running Friday Night Bingo but surprisingly came to enjoy it.

The family is extremely grateful to the staff and volunteers at the Villa for the respect and compassion shown to both Norm and Helen. Thanks for laughing at his jokes and listening to his tales as he shared his life stories.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 3 10:00 AM until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Monastery Chapel, 1910 Maple Avenue, Lisle, IL 60532. Interment will follow at St Joseph Cemetery, Hammond, IN at 3:00 PM. Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Naperville was entrusted with arrangements.
