Obituary for Norma L. Osano

Norma L. Osano (nee Laluma), age 77, a resident of Aurora, IL and Dueñas, Iloilo, Philippines, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at her home after a brave battle with cancer.

Norma was born April 28, 1940, in Dueñas, Iloilo City, Philippines. She was the devoted daughter of the late Diego and Manuela Laluma and the late Consolacion and Justino Lanaria. She earned her Doctorate in Medicine from Manila Central University, Philippines. She married her childhood friend, Renato, in 1964, and they moved to Chicago in 1970 to start their family. She became a cardio-respiratory technician for Thorek Memorial Hospital where she worked for 41 years. A devout Catholic, she was a member of St. Angela Parish in Chicago and St. Matthew’s Church in Glendale Heights.

Norma is survived by her husband of 53 years, Renato and their sons, Joseph (Lauren) and Ronnie (Amy Miceli); grandchildren, Stella and Maxwell Miceli-Osano; siblings, Remuel, Velina, Rodolfo, Rolando, Romulo, Josephine and Judith. She was a loving sister-in-law, cousin, aunt, great-aunt and friend to many.

She was a devoted, fierce and protective mother to her two sons. Norma did everything in her power to make sure her children had the best possible childhood and education and that they were well-prepared for their future. This deep affection was not limited to her own children, but extended to friends and her ever-expanding family. She was “Lola”, “Ninang” and “Ate” to many, and she cared for each and every one of them.

When her sons got married, she and Renato moved back to the Philippines to start the next chapter in their lives. There, she volunteered at the local health clinic in her town, helping those less fortunate. She made sure the children in her area were well-fed, often providing them with home-cooked meals, if they did not have enough to eat. On her visits back to Chicago, she bought toys, clothes and candy; shipping large boxes back home for her family and the neighborhood kids. Many times, she scheduled her visits so she was back home in time for Christmas, to make sure those less fortunate would have presents on Christmas Day and hosted the Christmas parties for the children in the area.

In 2016, while visiting her family in Chicago, Norma was diagnosed with cancer. She and Renato stayed in Aurora and lived with her son, Joe and daughter-in-law, Lauren. There, she was surrounded by friends and family until her last day, just as she always wanted to be. She was a cherished wife, mother, grand-mother, and friend. Her strong, yet sweet demeanor, hospitality and unlimited love and affection will be fondly remembered.
