Obituary for Mary Anne Brock

Mary Anne Brock, Ph.D. age 85 at peace on Friday, May 4, 2018. She was born on June 29, 1932 in Aurora, IL and grew up in Naperville, IL. She was the daughter of the late Paul Peter and Helen Mattas Brock.

Mary Anne attended SS. Peter and Paul Elementary School and Naperville High School, graduating in 1950, the last class to matriculate from the original high school. After attending and graduating from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa she entered graduate school at Harvard University/Radcliffe College in 1954. She was a Teaching Fellow in the Biology Department of Harvard University and was awarded the Ph.D. in 1959. After a post-doctoral research position at the Harvard Medical School, she joined the Gerontology Branch of the National Heart Institute of the National Institutes of Health in Baltimore, MD. in 1960. In 1975, the Gerontology Branch was elevated to Institute Status and became The National Institute on Aging. During her tenure there she studied and researched the phenomenon of aging in sub cellular, cellular, tissue and organism models of aging using ultrastructural, biochemical and physiological techniques. Her 73 publications include 7 book chapters and range from the effects of hibernation on erythrocyte longevity to sub cellular changes with age in coelenterates and tissue culture cells, and to biological clocks in mouse lymphocyte life spans and in the rate of aging of coelenterates. At Grinnell College she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa; in graduate school she was elected to Sigma Xi. She was a contributing member as an officer or member of committees to several scientific societies including The Society for Cryobiology, Association for Women in Science, The Gerontological Society of America and The American Society for Cell Biology. She was elected a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America in 1974 and a Fellow of The American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1995. She was elected to Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and Who’s Who in America. She retired from The National Institute on Aging in 1995 as a Senior Research Investigator. In 2000 she received The Alumni Award from Grinnell College in recognition of distinguished achievement and service; in 2006, The Phi Beta Kappa Society recognized her exemplary leadership and uncommon dedication to advancing the liberal arts and sciences.

After retirement, she returned to Naperville, Illinois where she became interested in local history and documented the history of the Paul P. Brock House and other historic structures such as the original swimming pool, Centennial Beach, constructed from one of the original quaries, the curved stairway from the Centennial Beach bathhouse and retaining wallls, the Bailey Hobson monument in Pioneer Park, Naper School, and Ellsworth School built by Paul P.
