Obituary for Lucy D. Bernard

Lucy D. Bernard (nee Colagrossi), age 94, a longtime resident of Warrenville, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. She was born April 6, 1923 in Chicago, IL.

Lucy is survived by her children Gary (Lorraine) Bernard, Frank (Shari-Lyn) Bernard, and John Bernard; grandchildren Nicholas Bernard, Andria (Justin) Sadowski, and Evan Bernard, Matthew, Mary, Rachel, Maria Lucia, Michael, and Margaret-Mary Bernard.

Lucy was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years Frank Bernard, parents Maria and Dominic Colagrossi; son Richard Bernard; siblings Dominic and Mary Jane Colagrossi.

Lucy graduated from John Marshall High School in Chicago, class of 1940, and went on to graduate from Wright Junior College in Chicago. She began her professional career working for advertising agencies in Chicago until she moved to Warrenville in 1957.

She led the effort to incorporate Warrenville as a city, and then was elected as their first city clerk, a position that she held for the next 25 years. She was the director of the Warrenville Historical Society, active in the Warrenville Youth and Family Services Organization, celebrated Warrenville’s 50 year celebration by having her own float in the parade as the only surviving member from Warrenville’s first days as a city, and had the “Lucy Bernard Pace Setter Award” named after her for her dedication, commitment, and work for the city. The mayor gave her the key to the city and has made April 6 “Lucy Bernard Day”.

Lucy was an active member of St. Irene’s Parish in Warrenville and was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, and the Catholic Council of Women. She was part of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. She accomplished all of this and more all while raising four wonderful sons.

Family and friends to gather for visitation Thursday, March 8 from 3:00 – 9:00 PM at St. Irene’s Parish 28W441 Warrenville Rd. Warrenville, IL 60555.

Additional visitation will take place Saturday, March 10 at 10:00 AM at the church until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 AM.

Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery, Winfield, IL.
