Obituary for Lois A. Sargeant

Lois Arlene (Russell) Sargeant died peacefully on Friday, June 1, 2018 at the age of 91 at North Arkansas Regional Medical Center in Harrison, AR. She always had a ready smile and wanted the best for all her loved ones.

Lois was the third of nine children. She was born in Waukegan, IL on April 25, 1927 to the late Ottis and Evelyn (Rowley) Russell. The family moved many times, living in Canada, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas and back again. She never ended the school year in the same school as it began. Along with her brother and sisters, she picked tomatoes and cotton in the summer. When she was 14 she was the best cotton puller in the field, hauling a 12 foot cotton sack behind her down the rows of cotton.

At 15 she worked as a live-in care taker for a little boy. At the age of 16 she began working at Abbott Laboratories in Waukegan, Illinois. When the family moved back to Missouri, she stayed behind, living first with her sister and then with her younger brother in the attic rooms he had rented in Oak Park, IL. She lived there for seven years and worked at several places during the war.

In 1952 she married the late Ethan (Al) Sargeant. They first lived at Elmhurst Collage while Al finished his degree. Then they moved to Hickory St. in Bensenville. They welcomed their son, Dale, in 1953 and their daughter, Wendy, in 1956. They bought the property behind them on White Pine Rd. from their landlord and built a house. Lois shingled the roof because she said Al wasn’t getting them straight. They moved into the house in 1957 and she lived there for 35 years.

In the mid-1960s she worked for Automatic Electric while Al started Allen Cabinet Co. She took accounting and business classes and helped run the cabinet company. Later, she worked as a quality control technician, first for Amsted Corporation and then for Saratoga Food Specialties.

In September, 1983 she earned her High School Equivalency Certificate. She retired from Saratoga in 1992 and moved to Joliet, Illinois to be closer to her daughter’s family and to help her son with his business until his passing in 2004. She lived in Joliet for 24 years.

In 2016, when her daughter and son-in-law retired to Jasper, Arkansas, she came to stay with them. Later she stayed with her sister, Wilma, who also moved to Jasper. She always considered Joliet her home and hoped to return someday although she loved being close to her family.

Lois was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She also embraced her Cherokee heritage.

She is survived by her daughter, Wendy (Ralph) Richard of Jasper, AR; grandchildren Kelli Sargeant of Chicago, IL, Jennifer Sargeant of Sherwood, OR, Russell Richard of Norfolk, VA, Brian Richard of Alexandria, VA, and Janet Richard of Kansas City, MO; siblings Wilma (Sylvester) Johnson, of Jasper, AR and Clarence Russell of Winona, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, Dale Sargeant; parents, Ottis and Evelyn Russell; siblings, Dorothy Plice, Charlotte Green, Donald Russell, Mary Russell, Kenneth Russell and Franklin Russell.
