Obituary for Joseph William Ernst

Joseph W. “Joe” Ernst, age 59, a longtime resident of Naperville, IL, passed away on June 5 in Chicago, IL. He was born September 10, 1958 in New York, NY.

Joe is survived by his wife of 27 years, Lisa Ernst; his children Emily and Josh Ernst; 8 siblings; many nieces and nephews; mother-in-law Joyce Wofford; his dear sister-in-law; innumerable friends.

He is preceded in death by his mother Shirley Jefferson and his father-in-law James Wofford.
Joe worked for FTD for 18 years and was known there as the “FTD Ambassador”. As early as high school, he wanted to deliver flowers so that he could deliver happiness to people every day. He instituted “Tie Tuesday” while there and enjoyed seeing everyone in their ties on Tuesdays.

He was involved with the Kicker Soccer Club for many years as a coach, manager, and lifelong cheerleader. He was also active with the Naperville and Fox Valley Park Districts as a soccer referee.

Joe was always the life of the party. He continuously had a smile on his face and was affectionately called “the mayor” by his family as he never knew a stranger. He befriended everyone he met and impacted the lives of all that he came in contact with. He loved dressing as Santa Claus for the neighborhood children, and even had a life size sleigh that he would sit in, so they could come take their picture with him.

Joe loved to play softball, go fishing with his buddies, and Christmas lights. He loved running marathons and could be seen running up to other runners who appeared to be struggling to offer motivation to keep them going. He greatly enjoyed a cold Coke or Budweiser, and THE Ohio State Football Team.

Joe will be remembered as having a great sense of humor, being genuine, and a go getter. He enjoyed challenges, setting goals and keeping them. Anything that he put his mind to he would accomplish. He loved the little things in life and living his life to the fullest. He would not let his family leave for the day without giving him a kiss goodbye as he often told them “You never know what tomorrow will bring.” Above all, he loved his family most.

Although he was taken from us way too soon, the things that he did and the lives that he touched while he was with us shows just how a great a man he was. He was loved by all that met him and will be deeply missed.
