Obituary for Ernest Allen Rossi

Ernest Allen Rossi, a Naperville resident since 1989, passed away at Edward Hospital in Naperville, IL, on Friday, March 2, 2018. Ernie was born in East Orange, NJ on March 9, 1944, to Ernest and Christine Rossi. The family moved to Miami, FL when Ernie was a young boy. He graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and later earned a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Southern California.

Ernie’s engineering career took him all over the country and even to an assignment in Vietnam. He spent the early years of his career in aerospace and construction management, then moved to the petrochemical industry from which he retired after a 29 year career with Exxon-Mobil. After retirement, he continued to work as an engineering consultant until the age of 70.

Ernie was united in marriage with his beloved wife, Sheila, on September 3, 1977. He was the proud father of three sons: Michael Paul (Paula), Todd Allen (Laura Main), and David Bailey Rossi, and the adoring Papa of three beautiful and much-loved granddaughters, Raja, Ereni, and Hadley, who will miss him always. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Glen Bates, and his nieces Hilary and Megan Bates.

A very hands-on father, Ernie coached many of his sons’ teams and was a Scout Master for both Cubs and Boy Scouts.

Growing up in FL, Ernie loved to fish, operate a ham radio, play the drums, and travel with the Boy Scouts, rising to the rank of Eagle Scout. He loved to read instruction manuals and could teach himself to fix anything. He was a proficient woodworker and loved cars, Porsches especially.

Ernie loved people, whether he was meeting new people as he and Sheila traveled, or mentoring young engineers in the workplace. He was a man of integrity, tenacity, and solid values. He was kind, generous with his time and talents, and had a great sense of humor. He loved animals and was popular with the birds as he kept his five backyard feeders always full.
He volunteered on boards and committees in Methodist Churches the family attended over the years and was currently serving as the president of the 2 East Erie Condo Association in Chicago.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Christine, his sister Carol and his brother Allen, and by Sheila’s parents Paul and Eleanor Bailey.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to celebrate Ernie’s life may contribute to a scholarship being established in his name in the Department of Physics and Engineering at Sheila’s alma mater, West Virginia Wesleyan College.
