Obituary for Donald J. O'Connor

Donald J. O'Connor, age 93, a resident of Brighton Gardens in Wheaton, IL, formerly of Naperville, IL and Daytona Beach Shores, FL, died Monday, January 1, 2018 at his home with his family by his side. He was born March 10, 1924 in The Bronx, NY.

Beloved husband of almost 58 years to the late Joanne P. O'Connor (nee Rowan), whom he married June 4, 1955 and who preceded him in death March 24, 2013, loving father of Rosemary (William) Buesing of Woodridge, IL, John (Teresa) O'Connor of San Diego, CA, Joseph O'Connor of Naperville, IL and Teresa (Kenneth) Potuznik of Cave Creek, AZ, adored grandfather of Matthew Bosnak, Lyndsey and William Buesing; Colleen, Michael (Violeta), Steven and Dana O'Connor; Shannon and Erin O'Connor; Travis Potuznik, cherished great-grandfather of Kathy Aguilar, devoted son of the late John and Mary O'Connor, dear brother of the late Jack, Bill, Joe and Fr. Larry O'Connor, fond cousin, uncle, great-uncle and friend to many.

Don grew up in Tottenville, Staten Island, NY and received an undergraduate degree in chemistry from City College of New York (CCNY) and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from Ohio State University in Columbus. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946 during World War II and was employed for many years as a chemist with Amoco Research Center, Whiting, IN and Naperville. Don held sixteen patents and was a member of Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society and Phi Lambda Upsilon National Honorary Chemistry Society.

Don was a longtime member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Naperville and taught CCD. He was also involved in the Naperville Community Watch program. Don had a passion for skiing and skied on his 80th birthday at Copper Mountain in Colorado. Don also enjoyed traveling with his wife, Joanne, and spending time at the beach when he lived in Florida.

Memorial Visitation Saturday, January 6, 2018, 9:30-11:00 AM at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville.

Memorial services will follow Saturday, 11:00 AM in the funeral home with Deacon Joe Verdico officiating.

Family & friends will go in procession to the chapel at Assumption Cemetery, Wheaton, IL for committal services and military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Don's memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, D.C. 20090-6011, (800) 272-3900, in honor of his late wife, Joanne, who suffered from Alzheimer's Disease.
