Obituary for Bruce F. Smith

Bruce F. Smith, age 74, a lifelong resident of Plainfield, IL, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2018, surrounded by the love of his family, after a courageous battle with multiple myeloma. He was born on November 5, 1943 in Joliet, IL.

Bruce is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Sandra A. Smith (nee Zientarski); his cherished children, Michael R. (Lisa) Smith of Joliet, IL and Mary F. (Brent) Brown of Plainfield, IL; his adored grandchildren, Steven Krause, Brandon Smith, Logan and Lauren Brown; his dear sisters, Patricia Puntney and Sally Rossmiller; as well as his many extended family members and friends who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond F. and Frances H. Smith, his brothers, James R. Smith and Scott L. Smith, and his nephew Scott Rossmiller.

Bruce attended St. Mary Immaculate School, Plainfield and was a graduate of Plainfield High School, Class of 1961. He worked for his entire career as a tool and die maker and happily retired in 2008. A true artisan, Bruce was able to create just about anything with his own hands. He excelled at woodworking, leather craft, cooking and baking, and shared his handmade treasures with his family and friends. He took great joy in giving a thoughtful piece to someone he met only once or twice.

Bruce possessed an awesome sense of humor and his laugh was infectious. He loved to be outside. Whether he was on his bicycle, riding one of his Harley’s, or walking to and from his church, Bruce enjoyed the world God created. He was a spiritual man and his well worn bible and prayer books traveled with him throughout his life. Bruce will be missed by all who loved him and called him “Honey”, Dad, Pa and friend.

For those who would like to leave a lasting tribute to Bruce’s life, memorials may be made to St. Mary Immaculate Church.
