Obituary for Brigid O'Donnell

Brigid Ann O’Donnell, 62, of Des Plaines, died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 11, at Glenbrook Hospital, Glenview. Brigid had battled many health issues for more than 30 years. But she refused to be defined by those issues. Instead, she is defined by her love for her family and friends, her devotion to her faith and her fighting spirit that enabled her to live independently for so many years.

Brigid was born Dec. 18, 1955, in Royal Oak, Michigan. She was the middle child of seven, with three older brothers and three younger brothers. Her family moved to Mount Prospect in 1962, where she attended and graduated from St. Raymond School. She was a December 1973 graduate of Forest View High School and then graduated from Harper College with a nursing degree. Brigid worked for Evanston Hospital as a nurse in the 1980s, a time she always looked at fondly.

In later years, Brigid’s love of NASCAR and her favorite driver, Jeff Gordon, brought her immense joy and she traveled, despite her disabilities, to many races throughout the country.

Brigid was a devoted sister, who is survived by three brothers, Barry (Teresa) of Bolingbrook, Colin (Mike Pelter) of Naperville and Kyle of Evanston. She was a beloved aunt to Colleen (Tim) Maynard of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin and Molly O’Donnell of Bolingbrook, and Brendan (Tamara) O’Donnell of Chicago, Stephen O’Donnell of Chicago, Michael O’Donnell of Pella, Iowa and MaryRose O’Donnell of Naperville. She is also survived by great-nephew Sean and great-niece Bernadette.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James J. and Mary Lou O’Donnell and her brothers, James, Kevin and Brian.
Memorial visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at St. Raphael Catholic Church, 1215 Modaff Road, Naperville, with a luncheon following. Burial will be private.
