Obituary for Barry Hepburn

Barry Hepburn, age 49, a resident of Naperville, IL, passed away unexpectedly on May 15, 2018. He was born on February 15, 1969 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Barry is survived by his wife Carelys (‘Pikipa’), his children Connor and Eliana, his mother Angela, and brother Jeremy. He was preceded in death by his father James and sister Shirley.

Barry Hepburn – amazing father, beloved husband and son, loyal friend – was the life of any party. His smile and his laughter would fill any room he was in. Loving and caring, Barry had a beautiful heart.

Barry spent his formative years in Edinburgh, where he attended the Edinburgh Academy before obtaining a degree in Business Management at Edinburgh University. His love of travel and adventure saw him spend a year circumnavigating the globe making friends wherever he went , before returning to start work with the accountancy firm Arthur Andersen.

During that time he met Carelys, and they fell madly in love. They shared a passion for travel and adventure which took them to many places in the world. They called themselves silly names and made the decision to spend their lives together. Early in their marriage, they moved to England where Barry pursued a career in business finance. His work brought him to America in 2001 where they settled in Stamford, CT until 2008.

Barry and Carelys had two amazing children, Connor and Eliana , and Barry took on the role he was destined for all his life – stay-at-home-dad extraordinaire. An exceptionally devoted and caring father to his children, he was magical with all kids, meeting them on their level and getting on with the fun. As his own children reached school age Barry brought his talents – and his camera – to support their activities and those of their friends. He could be seen any day at school corridors, gymnastic meets and soccer fields all over town.

You always knew when Barry had arrived, even when not wearing one of his hats or selection of brightly colored suits. He was a remarkable, independent-minded force of nature; a larger than life character who brought an inimitable humor and a razor-sharp wit to any situation; an attentive listener who noticed everything and never missed a beat. So it is perhaps no surprise that he was an exceptionally good and insightful writer who penned magnificent children’s stories for his children, and could produce hilarious and poignant poems to match any occasion.

A proud Scotsman, Barry held his heritage and the mountains of the Highlands dear to his heart and would take any excuse to get across to his homeland, into a car or a camper van, and have ‘a burn’ up into the hills. One of his greatest passions was submitting himself to the rollercoaster ride of supporting the Scottish national rugby team; his speechifying was the highlight of many a Burns Supper.

Barry was exceptionally organized, a born planner, who naturally never missed a detail. He was also a fixer – whether it was the classic cars he rebuilt as a young man, the remodeling of his house that he designed himself, or the helping hand he was always willing to extend to others. He loved the outdoors, camping, racquetball, and recently indoor hockey. He was always game for a bit of competition – including more than one that involved food.

Above all, Barry showered the ones he loved with incredibly thoughtful gifts of word and deed, and an insurmountable amount of love. Adored by so many, forgotten by none, he will be sorely missed.

Following a private service, family and friends will gather together to celebrate the life of Barry on Tuesday, May 22, 5.30–7.30pm at the Morton Arboretum, 4100 Illinois 53, Lisle, IL 60532.

Barry loved making collages – and we will be making one in his honor at the aforementioned celebration. Those wishing to attend are encouraged to bring a photo for inclusion.
