Bernard J. "Bernie" Kestel

Bernard J. "Bernie" Kestel, age 79, a resident of Naperville, IL since 1970, formerly of Manhattan, IL, passed away on Friday, April 7, 2017 at his home after a long illness resulting from a stroke suffered 11 years ago. He was born June 26, 1937 in Joliet, IL.

Beloved husband of Sheila Kestel (nee Hagerty), whom he married November 28, 1970 at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Naperville, loving father of Joseph (Naomi) Kestel of Roselle, IL, adored grandfather of Marco and Eva Kestel, devoted son of the late George and Edith (nee Koch) Kestel, dear brother of Lucille (the late Dick) Flynn of Villa  Park, IL, and the late Richard Kestel, Fred (the late Nancy) Kestel and Marcella (Edward) Keigher, brother-in-law of Marcia (Raymond) Fichtel of Warrenville, IL, Veronica (the late Clarence) Felten of Naperville, Paula (William) Scholtens of Vero Beach, FL and the late Barbara (Robert) Zywicki, fond uncle, great-uncle, and friend to many.

Bernie  grew up on his parent's farm in Manhattan, IL, attended Reiter School and was a 1955 graduate of Joliet Catholic High School.  He received his associates degree in electronics from Joliet Junior College (In 1998 he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from JJC). Bernie was employed as an engineering specialist microscopy technologist for 44 years at Argonne National Laboratory, retiring in 2002. Bernie published several technical articles and was the recipient of the 1994 Technologist of the Year by the Microscopy Society of America, 1996 Pacesetter Award by Argonne National Laboratory and 1998 Outstanding Service Award by the University of Chicago. Bernie was a current member of Holy Spirit Catholic Community and a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manhattan and St. Raphael Catholic Church in Naperville. Bernie served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1960-1961. He had a lifelong love of farming/gardening and owned farms in DeWitt, McLean and Shelby counties. Bernie also was an avid photographer and an amateur astronomer.

Funeral Information

Visitation Tuesday, April 11, 2017, 4:00-8:00 PM at Overman-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 15219 S. Joliet Rd., Plainfield, IL.  

Services will begin Wednesday, April 12, 9:00 AM from the funeral home and will proceed to a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Spirit Catholic Community, 2003 Hassert Blvd. (corner of 111th St. & Book Rd.), Naperville, IL.  

Interment: SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Naperville, IL.
