James J. "Jim" Duffin
May 26, 1927 - September 30, 2017
James Joseph Duffin, age 90, a Naperville resident since 1969. Born May 26, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois to the late George and Mae Duffin, at rest on Saturday, September 30m 2017. Jim was a south side boy from a Northern Ireland (Counties Antrim and Armagh) immigrant family of a hard working Chicago railroad and meat-packing tradition. He married Constance McDonough at St. Walter’s Parish, Chicago, IL on April 16, 1955. His enduring Catholic faith was an integral part of his life. Jim was an active model railroader, a ham radio operator, a skilled carpenter and a licensed pilot. Following his graduation from St. Ignatius High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy, and was stationed on Guam during his service in World War II. He graduated from Loyola University in 1950, and has always given thanks for the G.I. Bill which enabled this.
He was one of the first systems analysts for the United States Steel Corporation in Chicago until 1985, and, after his “early retirement”, enjoyed 17 years as a professor of Computer Science at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. Grounded in his deep faith, he was independent, opinionated and always in action.
His amusing stories of WWII in the Navy, his childhood on the south side of Chicago, and the Catholic school system endeared him to his grandchildren.
He is survived by three daughters of whom he was immensely proud, Kathy (Jimmy) Lindstrom, Patty (Gerry) Fanslow and Maureen Duffin. He leaves cherished grandchildren, Alana (Andy) Meyer, Joseph Lindstrom, Danielle Fanslow, Devin Fanslow and Blair Fanslow, and great granddaughter Camilla Meyer. He is also survived by his siblings, Rosemary (Earl) Canfield and John (Barbara) Duffin, his wife’s sister, Marguerite (James) Mallen and their families.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Constance Mary McDonough-Duffin in 2009.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 5th, 2017 from 3:00 to 8:00 PM at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill Street, Naperville, IL 60540.
