William Elliott Jones was born April 12, 1938, in Wabasha, MN to Jerold E. and Loretta C. (nee Riester) Jones.   He attended grade school and high school in Wabasha, graduating in 1956.  He was co-captain of his high school football team and was named all-conference in his senior year.  Upon graduation in 1956 from Wabasha High School, he entered the U.S. Air Force, serving for five years, stationed in Germany and France for three of those years.

After his honorable discharge from the U.S. Air Force in 1961, he attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis.  He was employed by Western Union Telegraph Co., in Minneapolis, MN, where in 1971, he was promoted to management.   During the course of his employment with the Telegraph Company, he was transferred several times, including to Omaha, NE, Burnsville, MN, Plano, TX and Naperville, IL.   He retired in 1992, at age 52, after 28 years of service.   After that he did some “fun” work, like teaching the laying of ceramic tile at Handy Andy Home Improvement Store in Naperville.   Later, he worked part-time hauling parts for Bill Kaye Chrysler in Naperville.   He was a very talented person who could fix almost anything and was called on quite often to do repairs for his children and friends.

Bill married Marianne Tvedt from Danvers, MN on July 3, 1965 at Church of the Incarnation in Minneapolis,  MN.   He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marianne, his son, Christopher William Jones (Mary Ann Hughes) of St. Michael, MN and two daughters, Julie Anne Jones McCormick (John) of Glen Ellyn, IL and Susan Marie Jones Thanepohn (Philip) of Newark, IL.  Bill was a devoted, beloved husband, father and grandfather, and he had a special relationship with each of his grandchildren, Brandon and Cody Jones, Zachary and Meagan McCormick and Leah Thanepohn. He is survived by his sister, Jane Jones Lewandowski (Thomas) of Wabasha, MN and a sister-in-law, Darlene Schumacher Jones of Wabasha, MN.  Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Jerold and Loretta Jones, brother, Jerold F. Jones (Darlene Schumacher Jones) and two sisters, Donna Jones Benjamin and Marietta Jones Flanaghan.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who loved and adored him.

Bill was a member of St. Anne’s Church in Oswego, IL, and Our Lady of Grace in Avon Park, FL, the American Legion, The Tanglewood Florida Veterans Association, the Retired Western Union Employees Association, and the Society of Mayflower Descendants.  He had also served on the Parish Worship Team at Mary, Mother of the Church in Burnsville, MN.   He was a Cub Scout leader in Burnsville and coached youth league football, baseball, basketball and softball teams in both Burnsville, MN and Plano, TX.

Bill loved to travel, and he and Marianne had covered most of the United States, including 10 trips to his favorite place, Hawaii, also Canada, the Caribbean and many countries in Europe.    He also loved to read, play on his iPad or spend afternoons in his friends and neighbors garages or car ports, sharing stories.  Bill and Marianne had been “snowbirds” in Sebring, FL since 2003.

May his memory and especially his smile be a blessing to all whose lives he touched.
