Jerome R. Garrity

Jerome R. “Jerry” Garrity, 82, of Naperville, Illinois, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family on October 30th, 2017. He was born September 4th, 1935 in Chicago, Il the son of the late Thomas and Mary Therese (Higgins) Garrity. He attended St. Ethelreda Grammar School and Parker High School in Chicago. He earned his B.S. from Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL.
Jerry is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of 61 years, Jeanne Marie (nee Freemon); his seven loving daughters: Mary Therese (Edward) Meehan, Kathleen Prutos, Patti (Brian) Coleman, Julie (Lewis) Breese, Maureen (Dr. Thomas) Shanley, Carole (Todd) Kristensen, Laura Gonnella; his beloved son: Shawn (Jennifer) Garrity; 23 grandchildren: Erin (Jimmy) Diaz, Breehan Hurley, Bridget (Chris) Hodina, Zita and Jerry Prutos, Kevin, Maura and Daniel Coleman, Kristen Breese (Eric) Hupp, Casey (Corbett) McCormick, Lewis “Tripper” and Riley Breese, Lauren, Molly, Ashleigh and Matthew Shanley, Ryan and Kelsey Kristensen, Olivia and Nicholas Gonnella, Tyler, Dylan and Hayden Garrity; 11 great-grandchildren: Lily, Liam, Gavin, Carter, Kylie, Nolan, Ryder, Colin, Cameron, Greyson, Ashlynn; his brother in law Bernard and the late Johanna (nee Carlson) Freemon, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. His brother Donald Thomas and Ann (nee Calling) Garrity preceded him in death.
Jerome’s professional career spanned more than six decades as an executive with the research firm Richarson Company; tray manufacturer Silite; profile extruder Perfex Plastics; Catalin Corporation and Cities Service. In November 1973, he founded J.R. Plastics and opened a manufacturing plant Specialty Products in 1977. He completed his business career with Resinoid Engineering and Lovdahl Manufacturing.
Jerry was a vibrant part of the Naperville community for many years. He served as president of the Sts. Peter & Paul School Board and as a member of the Dad’s Club at Benet Academy for many years. He was a founding member of St. Margaret Mary Parish and instrumental in the formation of All Saints Catholic Academy in Naperville. Before that he served as president of the Holy Name Society Men’s Club at St. John the Apostle Church in Villa Park. He also was a devoted member of the fraternal order of Moose Lodge and helped raised funds for Mooseheart.
A lifelong Green Bay Packers football and Chicago White Sox fan, Jerry was also a dedicated coach for baseball and avid spectator for volleyball and soccer. His legacy team- the J.R.Stars baseball team-continues today under his son’s leadership.
Jerry was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, great grandfather, and loyal friend who lived for his family and will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be Friday, November 3, 2017 from 3:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St, Naperville, IL 60540. Visitation Saturday, November 4 from 9:30 until the time of Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 1450 Green Trails Drive Naperville, IL. 60540. Interment private.
