Mary Dobis Moore "Nana", age 103, a resident of Naperville, IL, since 1986, formerly of Chicago, IL, passed on Tuesday, July 4, 2017, at her home. She was born February 22, 1914, in Helvetia, PA.
Beloved wife of the late Era W. Moore, whom she married September 11, 1943, and who preceded her in death on January 19, 1995, loving mother of Mary I. (Jim) Vandendorpe of Naperville and the late William E. Moore, adored grandmother of Eric W. (Diana) Moore, Sandra L. (Norman Marion) Moore, Laura M. (Michael) McNelis and David L. Vandendorpe, great-grandmother of Veronica Moore, Sara Moore, Charles Moore, Mariah Moore, Keira McNelis, Ethan McNelis, Liam McNelis and Abigail McNelis, devoted daughter of the late Stanley and Mary Dobis, dear sister of the late Steven Dobis, Anthony Dobis, Ann Hardick, Stella Dulovich, Sally Trenshaw, Joseph Dobis and Willie Schiller, sister-in-law of Jearldine Mars and George Thomas Haddox, fond aunt of many, including Lawrence Hardick, Paul Hardick and Mary Ann Hodge, great-aunt of many, including Jane Hardick, great-great aunt and friend of many. A special thank you to Almira "Aming" Sirmarco, Mary's devoted friend for more than 15 years.
Born in a coal town in western Pennsylvania, Mary moved to Manhattan during the Great Depression to help support her family. Mary was chosen by Mr. Stouffer to open the flagship Stouffer’s Chicago restaurant. There she met and married her dear “Eric”, with whom she shared her life for 53 years. She was a member of the Altar and Roses Society, editor of the Stouffer’s employee newsletter, president of the condominium association, 18-year sponsor of a little girl in Guatemala, caretaker of her husband, sister, and son through their terminal illnesses. She was the loving center of an extended network of family and friends with whom she shared her love through letters and soda breads. She was devoted to her Catholic faith, and was a gifted cook, baker, gardener and seamstress. Most importantly, she taught us to love better, to share gracious hospitality throughout life and to care for each other and all of God’s children.
