Joseph J. Chovelak

May 12, 1925 - June 30, 2017

Joseph J. “Joe” Chovelak, age 92, a resident of Geneva, IL, formerly of Chicago, Westchester and Naperville, IL, died Friday, June 30, 2017 at Seasons Hospice Home in Naperville.  He was born May 12, 1925 in Alpha, NJ.

Beloved husband of the late Lorraine (nee Parowski) Chovelak, whom he married August 18, 1951 and who preceded him in death January 13, 2017, loving father of Elissa (Christopher) Cochran of Tucson, AZ, Cynthia Chovelak of Naperville and Laura (Martin) Clam of Naperville, adored grandfather of David and Tiffany Cochran; Stacy and Geoffrey Clam, devoted son of the late Joseph and Grace (nee Tomer) Csovelak, dear brother of James (Betty) Csovelak of Palm Bay, FL, brother-in-law of the late Doris Csovelak, uncle of James (Jill) Csovelak of Easton, PA and Thomas (Eileen) Bubula of Winona, MN, great-uncle of Joanie (Jeff) Davies and Mark (Andrea) Bubula; Lucas and Marissa Csovelak. 

Joe grew up in Alpha, NJ, attended Phillipsburg High School in Phillipsburg, NJ and served with the U.S. Army Air Force during World II. Stationed in Guam in the Pacific theater, Joe was a radio operator on a B-29 Bomber, proudly flying 35 bombing missions over Japan. After the war, Joe was employed for 36 years as a broadcast engineer with NBC in Chicago, retiring in 1985.  During his retirement years, Joe served as the historian of his unit, the 20th Air Force, 29th Bomb Group, 314th Wing.  His research and memorabilia reside at the Bombers On The Prairie Museum in Pratt, KS and the Library of Congress, Washington, DC.  He was a member of the VFW Judd-Kendall Post #3873 in Naperville and a former member of Divine Infant and Divine Providence Catholic Churches, both in Westchester. Joe was a military history enthusiast and he enjoyed fishing with family and friends in Wisconsin and Canada. He was a member of the Riverside Fishing Club.

Funeral Information

Visitation Monday, July 10, 2017, 4:00-8:00 PM at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St, Naperville. 

A celebration of Joe and Lorraine's lives will take place on Tuesday, July 11, 10:00 AM in the funeral home with Chaplain Chad Leonard officiating. 

Interment for Joe and Lorraine will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, IL.
