Danna L. Hughley

November 12, 1950 - November 01, 2017

On November 1, 2017, Heaven gained an exceptional (and impeccably dressed) angel, when Danna L. Hughley, age 66, of Naperville, IL, passed away.

Danna was born November 12, 1950, in Dublin, Georgia. She was raised alongside her cousin, Faye, by her grandmother, Lillie Smith. As a daughter of the South, Danna experienced harsh segregation and realities of the day, but that was more than offset by the care and nurturing provided by her wonderful grandmother. At age 16, Danna moved to Rochester, New York, where she later graduated from high school and set out on her own. In 1975, she married the love of her life, Coleman Hughley, at Aenon Baptist Church in Rochester, New York, and the two remained married for 42 years until her passing.

The couple first relocated to New York City before settling down to start a family in New Jersey, where they birthed Tyra, now 34, and Jonathan, now 32. They relocated to Naperville 30 years ago, and have become mainstays in the West Suburban African American community. Danna was heavily involved in spiritual service at St. John AME, not only in the Sanctuary Choir and as Birthday Club Coordinator, but also as the Black History Month Program Coordinator, where she assisted in hosting esteemed historical figures, such as Shirley Chisholm and Carol Moseley Braun, at the church on an annual basis. One of Danna’s personal priorities was developing our youth’s understanding and appreciation of our African American culture. Every February, she visited her children’s schools to instruct and guide the Black History Month education and learning programs. Danna was also an active and leadership committee member in the West Suburban Chicago Chapter of Jack and Jill of America. She was proud of her heritage, and wanted to make sure that diversity and inclusion became staples in the minds of young people in the area. She truly believed in Luke 12:48, “Unto whom much is given, much is required,” and strove to instill those beliefs into her children.

In 2008, Coleman and Danna incorporated CDENT (Coleman and Danna Enterprises), a Shell retail gasoline operator. At its peak, CDENT operated 18 gas stations in the Chicagoland area. Danna, the Vice President, worked hand-in-hand with Coleman; they were a team, a force to be reckoned with.

Later, after joining DuPage AME Church, Danna became active in the Women’s Missionary Society and the Sanctuary Choir. Since 2010, Coleman and Danna have been seasonal residents of Las Vegas, to escape the Chicago winter cold. She split her time between Naperville and Las Vegas until she passed away suddenly on November 1, 2017, at Edward Hospital in Naperville, Illinois.

Danna was truly the epitome of the Proverbs 31 Woman.

Danna is survived by her cherished and devoted husband of 42 years, Coleman Hughley; her loving children, Tyra Hughley of Los Angeles, California, and Jonathan Coleman (Amanda) Hughley of Brookfield, Illinois; her adored grandson, Elijah Coleman Hughley; her fond siblings, Larry (Shantel) Frazier, Julius (Karen) Frazier, Alvord (Terri) Frazier, Timothy Frazier, Cassandra Minus, Derrell Jackson, Charlene Jackson, and Dawn (Jerry) Lincoln; and her dearest cousin Faye (Robert) Mosley, and her aunt Elizabeth Walker.

She is predeceased by her mother, LouEllen Frazier, her father, Arlincoln Jackson, her beloved aunt, Ruth McLendon, and her grandmother, Lillie Smith.
