Sr. Gesuina Bongiorno, OSM

June 03, 1937 - February 03, 2017

Sister Gesuina Bongiorno, OSM, age 79, was called home to the Lord on February 3, 2017 at Marian Lake Convent in Plainfield, IL, after a courageous battle with cancer. Sister Gesuina was a member of the Mantellate Sisters Servants of Mary for 62 years.

Sister Gesuina will be greatly missed by the Mantellate Sisters Servants of Mary, especially her Sisters at Marian Lake; her family: her sister, Phyllis (Salvatore) Buttadaurro; her brother, Joseph (Margaret) Bongiorno; her nephew, Jeffrey (Nahrin) Radogna; her nieces, Maria Buttadaurro, Julia and Marie Bongiorno; many cousins, the Secular Servite Members and so many friends and people she served and ministered with, especially the “Holy Rollers”. She was preceded in death by her parents, Philip and Marie (nee Termini) Bongiorno and her niece,  Mary Patricia Bongiorno in infancy.

Through the years, she totally dedicated herself to God, the Church and the Congregation. She was a talented Religious Education teacher at Mother of Sorrows High School, Blue Island. She also taught at schools in Melrose Park, IL and Hobart, IN. In the Joliet Diocese, she was involved in various ministries serving the Church as a catechist, Religious Education Consultant and retreat/workshop facilitator. Sister Gesuina shared her gifts and talents with her Congregation and the Community as Regional Superior, Provinical/Regional Councilor, Mistress of the Juniorate Sisters in Formation and Coordinator of Vocation promotion. She was a crafter of rosaries and memorial items made from roses. This ministry is a part of the Community’s “bereavement” ministry. Sister Gesuina also initiated the St. Peregrine Ministry at Marian Lake, Plainfield. Everything that she did was done with ‘single mindedness’, her love for God and those she served. Everything she did was done with “heart”.

The Mantellate Sisters deeply appreciated the care and support given to Sister Gesuina and the Community during her illness, especially the outstanding care she received from the Joliet Area Community Hospice staff.
