James A. Mellon, age 79, a longtime resident of Joliet, IL, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2017 surrounded by the love of his family at Symphony of Orchard Valley. He was born in Dubuque, IA on February 26, 1938.

James is survived by his loving children, James (Darlene), Justin (Cassidy) and Katie (Nick); his cherished grandchildren, Caleb, Hannah, Juliana, Mia and Wyatt; his brother, David (Caron) and his sister, Penny (the late Danny); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Margaret (nee Cleary) Mellon; his step-fathers, Clarence Stillmunkes and Ransom Alexander; his siblings, Margaret "Margie" (the late Harold “Junior”) Saeugling, Jo Ann (Morris “Mike”) Steve, Virtus (Delores) Stillmunkes and Wilfred “Bill” (the late Regina) Stillmunkes.

Jim proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1958. Throughout his life he enjoyed operating his own businesses and the opportunities they afforded him to display his endless generosity. He was a dependable friend who could be counted on like no other. He possessed a tremendous sense of humor and was always a good time to be around. He had a fascination with history and sports, and could recall amazing details with ease. He was not a man of words, but a man of action. Jim lived every day to the fullest and ran full throttle. He was always ready for the next big adventure and wouldn’t hesitate to pack a bag and say “let’s go!” Above all, Jim was an extremely devoted father who was always there for his family. Although he will be deeply missed, Jim will definitely not be forgotten anytime soon.
