Gary P. Benson

Gary P. Benson, age 66, a resident of Naperville, IL since 1987, formerly of LaCrosse, WI, passed away suddenly on Monday, January 23, 2017 at Edward Hospital in Naperville after a short but brave fight with pancreatic cancer. He was born March 30, 1950 in Two Harbors, MN.
Beloved husband of Sally Benson (nee Naxera), whom he married April 21, 1979, loving father of Dr. Sarah E. Benson, Curtis M. Benson and Matthew S. Benson, devoted son of the late Burton and Marjorie Benson, dear brother of Steven (Jean) Benson of Rochester, MN and Ronald (Julie) Benson of Two Harbors, MN, son-in-law of Fred Naxera III of Louisiana, MO and the late Imogene Naxera, brother-in-law of Patrice (Dr. Mike) Vallar, Nancy Naxera and Fred Naxera IV, fond uncle of Kimberly (Bryan) Zlimen and Jeffery Benson; Carrie (Dr. Miriah Teeter) Vallar and Dr. Kelly Vallar; Mackey and J.P. Middleton and Molly Naxera, great-uncle of Ani and Jacob Zlimen; Gavin and Weston Teeter, cousin and friend of many.
Gary was born and raised in Two Harbors, a small town in Northern Minnesota on the shores of Lake Superior. He graduated with distinction from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and Master's Degree in Business Administration. After graduation, he held marketing and product management positions at The Trane Company. Here he met and married his best friend and life companion, Sally. In 1987, Gary joined The New York Blower Company and moved to Naperville, where he held senior management positions at NYB, as VP of Marketing, elected to their Board of Directors, President of Mechanovent Corporation and Barron Industries. Gary served as a Director of the Air Movement & Control Assoc (AMCA) for ten years and as its President, receiving his industry’s highest Distinguished Service Award in 2013. He retired from his active career in January of 2015.
Gary had many interests outside his accomplished career and was amazingly productive. He was an active, analytical student of life and world events. He was beyond generous in spending time with his beloved family, collecting lifelong friends. He loved cooking turkey dinners, motorcycle touring, antique autos, gardening, finance and remodeling projects. He was fortunate to travel extensively with family and friends. He was involved in many academic, business and community organizations including Pi Tau Sigma, Tau Beta Pi, Junior Achievement, Boy Scouts of America, YMCA coaching, Knight of Columbus, and additional industry associations such as AHRI and ASHRAE. He attended Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors as a youth. He converted to Catholicism and along with Sally are founding members of St. Elizabeth Seton in Naperville.
Visitation Thursday, February 2, 2017, 3:00-9:00 PM at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, IL.
Services will begin Friday, February 3, 9:00 AM from the funeral home and will proceed to a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, 2220 Lisson Rd., Naperville.
