Max E. Harbach, age 91, a resident of Naperville, IL since 1971, passed away Friday, December 1, 2017 at The Springs of Monarch Landing in Naperville. He was born on March 17, 1926 in Williamsport, PA.
Husband of Phyllis Harbach (nee Gladewitz), whom he married January 30, 1949, father of Alice (Terry) Philippi of Denton, NE, Meredith (Bob) Winkler of O'Fallon, IL and Beverly (Brian Walker) Harbach of Downers Grove, IL, grandfather of Jenny (Grant) Powell, Drew (Katie) Philippi and Evan Philippi; Erin (Brian Sweet) Winkler and Matthew (Elizabeth) Winkler; Morgan Harbach Walker, great-grandfather of Max and Lilly Powell; Nash, Jules and Teller Philippi; Emma Roller and Alex Sweet, son of the late Chester and Bertha (nee Reppard) Harbach, brother of Chester A. (Barbara) Harbach of Williamsport, PA and the late Howard (the late Betty) Harbach and the late Bernice (the late Carl) Kackenmeister, cousin, uncle, great-uncle and friend of many.
Max grew up in Williamsport, PA, was a 1944 graduate of Williamsport Senior High School and served with the U.S. Navy from June 1944 - June 1946 in the Pacific theater, aboard the USS Hancock, during World War II. After receiving an honorable discharge, Max attended Lycoming College in Williamsport before transferring to Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY and earning a civil engineering degree in 1950. Max retired in 1986 after 36 years of service as General Superintendent of Construction with the Natural Gas Pipeline in Lombard, IL. Max was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Naperville, serving on the board of trustees and as a member of the choir 1972-1992. He was also a member of the American Legion Naperville Post 43. Max was a skilled woodworker who made his own furniture, toys, etc. He applied his skills as a volunteer at Naper Settlement for 30 years.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, 10:00 AM in the church with Rev. Don Niswonger officiating.
A luncheon will follow the funeral services.
Family & friends will meet Thursday, 2:30 PM at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL for committal services and military honors.
