Online Obituaries

Elaine F. Scarborough

March 18, 1924 - August 03, 2017

Elaine F. Scarborough, 93, resident of Naperville since 1976, died at her home on August 3, 2017. Born on March 18, 1924 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, she was the oldest child of Willis Powell and Frances Corrigan. In 1951, she married James Mott Scarborough in Palo Alto, California.  They had two children, Clay (died 1989) and Eva-Genevieve, and two grandchildren, James and David.  James (Jim) Scarborough died in 1995. Throughout her life, Elaine read widely and enthusiastically—fiction, biography, poetry, politics, history, geography, and much more.  She strongly supported public libraries and served on the Board of the Naperville Public Library from June 1986 to May 1992.  Earlier this year, in honor of her 93rd birthday, family and friends donated funds that will be used to equip the children’s room in the Nichols Library. An avid follower of politics and an advocate of good government, Elaine was a lifetime member of the League of Women Voters.  She served as Co-President of the Naperville League from 1982 to 1984. Elaine delighted in good food and good conversation about current events, world affairs, books, art, words, and popular culture.  She and like-minded friends enjoyed these pursuits in Sophia’s Salon, a reading and discussion group they formed in the 1990s and continued for many years.  Using the iPad she acquired at age 89, she not only kept in touch with family and friends around the country, but also expanded her researches across the World Wide Web.
