Gordon M. Carter

Gordon M. Carter, age 84, a resident of Naperville, IL since 2007, formerly of Golden, CO, Tucson, AZ and Fair Oaks Ranch, TX, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 in Naperville surrounded by his family. He was born on February 16, 1933 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Beloved husband of Judy Carter, whom he married July 19, 1985, former spouse of the late Lois Carter, loving father of Karen (Jay) Mikes of Elburn, IL, Garth (Lisa) Carter of Naperville and Lynda (Dave) Grabarek of Bartlett, IL, adored grandfather of Zach (Betty) Perry, Josh and Emily Mikes; Max (Alicia), Christine, Grace and Ella Carter: J.C. and Brett Grabarek, cherished great-grandfather of Jocelyn and Dillon, devoted son of the late Bert and Wilma Carter, dear brother of Berna (Vince) Frattaroli of Calgary, Alberta, Canada and the late George Carter, fond cousin, uncle, great-uncle and friend of many.

Gordon grew up on the family farm and after graduating from Central Collegiate he joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He served in southern Alberta for five years before transferring to the RCMP "Air" Division, where as a pilot he served in the central Canadian Arctic. Flying out of Churchill, Manitoba, Gordon became well respected in the area and was responsible for many emergency medical evacuations and rescue missions. In 1967, Gordon became a pilot for United Airlines, he would go on to become a Captain and check pilot on the DC10.  Gordon was responsible for working with the Douglas and United test pilots during the investigation of a crash at Sioux City, IA. Gordon was slated to be the first pilot to fly the DC10 after completion of modifications made to the hydraulic system, as a result of that crash.

Gordon and Judy retired in 1995 and moved to the Sun Belt, living in Tucson for four years, followed by a move to Fair Oaks Ranch, TX where they lived for ten years. It was during this time that Gordon's golf game improved; he achieved the honor of three hole-in-ones. He would also study the rules of golf and became a volunteer rules official for the USGA. Gordon and Judy enjoyed skiing, golf and traveling. They were always involved in the life of their Episcopal Church. When it was discovered that Gordon had Parkinson's Disease he and Judy returned to Illinois to be close to their family.

Funeral Information

Memorial Visitation will be Saturday, November 4, 2017, 9:30 - 10:45 AM at  St. John's Episcopal Church, 750 Aurora Avenue, Naperville, IL. 

Memorial services Saturday, 11:00 AM at St. John's Episcopal Church with Rev. Verna Fair officiating. 

Inurnment will follow at St. John's Episcopal Church Columbarium.

A reception will follow at the church.
