Jean K. Wehrli

December 06, 1928 - December 12, 2016

Wit. Photography. Reading. Cheerful presence at every event. Daughter of Judge Win and Irene Knoch, Jean was the second oldest of the Four Knoch Girls. Wife of the late Trolley Meister Don Wehrli. Mother of 7 children. “If you have something better to do than dishes, go do it.” Enthusiast of Garage and Estate Sales, Lectures and Concerts, Outings and her dear Book Group ladies. Student. Gentle, guiding Mother.

Jean walked from the family home at 501 N. Main Street to Saints Peter & Paul Grade School and Naperville High School (Class of 1946). In a bargain with her parents she attended St. Theresa’s College in Winona, Minnesota for two years and completed her studies at the University of Illinois Champaign where she was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority, Sigma Omicron Chapter.

Jean went on to teach high school English in Forrest, Illinois. “Do your level best, in a cheerful spirit, right now.” She dearly loved her students and believed in recognizing the unique spirit in each child. They cherished her presence at many reunions. Returning to Naperville Jean was a proofreader at Argonne National Laboratory. She later served on the first Naperville Arts Commission and Naperville Park District Skateboard Park Committee.

On April 19,1952, Jean married childhood friend and classmate Don Wehrli. They raised their 7 children in Naperville. “I go to bed early to be fresh for the emergency.” She loved them very much. She was gracious and kind through the final stages of cerebral vascular dementia.  “Thank you for helping me today.”

In addition to 3 esteemed sisters, Marjorie Knoch Schaller, Doris Knoch Wood and Joanne Knoch Strong (Jim), Jean is survived by 7 children, Mary Lou (Herb), Win (Deborah), Fred (Anne), Jill, Francie, Annette and Grant (Sharon); 14 grandchildren Sarah, Megan (Travis), Lauren (Josh), Michelle (Aaron), Dana, Michael (Colleen), Austin, Elizabeth, Kayla, Colette, Jack, Jake, Joe, and Luke; and 3 great-grandchildren Emma, Benjamin& Harper.

She was a proud member of the Wehrli Out-Laws: Lorraine (Bob), Bev (Bob), Wally (Marge), Ginny (Jim), Bettye (Jim), Dorothy (Joe), (Calista), Audra (Mike), Bob (Jean), Virginia (John “Harp”), Joe (Joyce), Judy (Dick), Jerry (Carol) and Bob (Ann).
